The Spider-Man we’ve seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is undergoing a significant change. A new development regarding Uncle Ben alters a key part of Peter Parker’s story, essentially rewriting his background within the franchise. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films have successfully blended characters from the broader MCU with familiar faces – both heroes and villains – from the original Spider-Man comics.
The upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day will feature classic Spider-Man villains such as Tombstone, Boomerang, and Tarantula, alongside returning heroes like Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and the Punisher (Jon Bernthal). This approach—mixing classic villains with established heroes—is typical for Spider-Man films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Interestingly, despite his prominence in the comics, one major Spider-Man character has never actually appeared on screen, though a different iteration of him has been alluded to.
Uncle Ben, the important figure from Peter Parker’s past, appeared in the Spider-Man movies starring both Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. However, he wasn’t present in Tom Holland’s first three Marvel Cinematic Universe films. This was logical because audiences met Holland’s Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War after he’d already been Spider-Man for a while, implying that Uncle Ben had passed away before those events. Later, in Spider-Man: No Way Home, both Maguire and Garfield’s versions of Peter mentioned their Uncle Bens.
Recently, a surprising detail about Spider-Man’s backstory in the Marvel Cinematic Universe came to light, though it wasn’t revealed in a movie. In an interview with CBR marking the 10th anniversary of Captain America: Civil War, the Russo Brothers shared that Peter Parker wasn’t actually responsible for Uncle Ben’s death. Director Joe Russo explained that if he had been, Tom Holland’s portrayal of Spider-Man would be much darker. This changes a key part of the character’s established history.
Marvel’s Reveal Means Uncle Ben’s Death Does Not Impact Spider-Man The Same Way
Traditionally, Uncle Ben’s death is the key event that motivates Peter Parker to become Spider-Man and learn to use his powers responsibly. He initially acts carelessly, which tragically leads to Ben’s death, and Peter then dedicates himself to honoring his uncle’s memory by becoming a hero. However, the Marvel Cinematic Universe version of the story removes this crucial element of Spider-Man’s origin.
Marvel has kept Spider-Man’s backstory largely a mystery in the MCU, leaving out key events like the spider bite and Uncle Ben’s death. Now, it seems the defining guilt that motivated Peter Parker to become Spider-Man was never actually shown. We still don’t know how Uncle Ben died, how it affected Peter, or what truly inspired him to become a hero. Recent comments from the Russo Brothers have only made Uncle Ben’s already limited role in the MCU even smaller.
The MCU Replaced Uncle Ben’s Defining Spider-Man Moment With The Perfect Character
It’s clearer now why Marvel and Sony decided to give Uncle Ben’s iconic moment to Aunt May, played by Marisa Tomei. She’d been a constant presence in Peter Parker’s life throughout his time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Tom Holland’s Spider-Man inadvertently caused her death by trying to cure the villains in Spider-Man: No Way Home instead of simply returning them to their own universes, as Doctor Strange advised. This allowed Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin enough time to kill her.
When Aunt May passed away, she shared the famous line, “With great power comes great responsibility,” with Peter Parker, just as Uncle Ben did before her. This felt natural, as Aunt May and Uncle Ben have a close relationship in the comics and other Spider-Man stories, making her a fitting substitute for the character we never see on screen. By saying this before the events of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Aunt May’s death serves the same purpose as Uncle Ben’s – it marks a turning point for Peter, solidifying his understanding of what it truly means to be Spider-Man.
