Clash Royale features a wide range of cards, leading to many different deck strategies. Some decks, such as Miner Poison, prioritize defense and gradual damage, while others, like those built around PEKKA or Golem, aim for powerful, all-in attacks.
A key to winning against your opponent is figuring out what kind of deck they’re using early in the game. Even just a few cards can give you clues about their strategy. Especially as you play against stronger opponents, most players have a specific plan, so understanding common deck types will really help you.
Find out all the main deck archetypes in Clash Royale and the best deck for each strategy below!
All Deck Strategies in Clash Royale
There are six types of decks in Clash Royale:
- Beatdown Decks
- Control Decks
- Bait Decks
- Bridge Spam Decks
- Siege Decks
- Cycle Decks
Beatdown Decks
- Beatdown Decks rely on a single Tank to push, supported by other troops from behind.
- Best Beatodwn Deck:
| Clash Royale Cards | Elixir Cost |
|---|---|
| Golem | Eight |
| Lumberjack | Four |
| Night Witch | Four |
| Baby Dragon | Four |
| Mega Minion | Three |
| Zap | Two |
| Tornado | Three |
| Lightning | Six |
Many players new to Clash Royale start with what’s called a “beatdown” deck. The goal is to create a powerful, large-scale attack led by a tough, defensive unit – a ‘tank’ – and backed up by other troops. A good example of this is the classic Giant and Witch combination you see in the beginning arenas.
A common strategy is to place your main tank unit—like Giant, Golem, or Lava Hound—behind your King Tower at the start of the match. Then, as it advances, you support it with other troops. By the time it reaches the bridge, you’ve created a powerful attack. Because you typically only get a few good opportunities to push in a match, it’s important to make each one as strong as possible.
The main challenge is defending effectively. Because strong attack decks cost a lot of elixir, you’re vulnerable if your opponent focuses on the other side of the arena while you’re trying to build up your own attack. You might have to use your resources to defend, which can slow down your progress.
Control Decks
- Control Decks rely on slow and focused gameplay where you chip away at enemy health while defending.
- Best Control Deck:
| Clash Royale Cards | Elixir Cost |
|---|---|
| Miner | Three |
| Little Prince | Three |
| Poison | Four |
| Royal Ghost | Four |
| Goblin Hut | Four |
| Barbarian Barrel | Two |
| Skeletons | One |
| Wallbreakers | Two |
Control decks are the opposite of aggressive, fast-paced strategies. Rather than trying to win quickly with powerful attacks, they focus on playing defensively and controlling the game. They can be tricky to master initially, but once you do, they can be very frustrating for opponents.
The Control strategy isn’t about quickly destroying a tower. Instead, it focuses on gradually weakening it while also protecting your own. This consistent, small damage eventually adds up and often leads to victory.
Many Control decks include powerful spells like Rocket or Poison. These spells are used to both damage the enemy tower and eliminate opposing troops.
Bait Decks
- Bait Decks are used to bait opponent counters so you can use your win condition.
- Best Bait Deck:
| Clash Royale Cards | Elixir Cost |
|---|---|
| Knight | Three |
| Princess | Three |
| Goblin Barrel | Three |
| Goblin Gang | Three |
| Inferno Tower | Five |
| The Log | Two |
| Rocket | Six |
| Ice Spirit | One |
Many players are currently using “bait” decks, which can be really annoying to play against if you’re not prepared. These decks focus on using inexpensive cards with low health, such as the Princess, Dart Goblin, and Goblin Gang, to distract and overwhelm opponents.
These strategies make your opponent waste their spell cards, like Log or Arrows, which are typically used to clear out large groups of units. Once they’ve used those spells, you can then play your key cards and gain a significant advantage because they won’t have a way to defend against them.
If you’re facing a Beatdown strategy, focus on dealing damage quickly at the beginning of the game. It’s tough to recover from strong attacks later on, so even a little early damage can really add up and help you win.
Bridge Spam Decks
- Bridge Spam is used to pressure your opponents at the bridge to force them to make a mistake so you can take advantage.
- Best Bridge Spam Deck:
| Clash Royale Cards | Elixir Cost |
|---|---|
| Battle Ram | Four |
| Royal Ghost | Three |
| Ice Golem | Two |
| Lumberjack | Four |
| Zappies | Four |
| Inferno Dragon | Four |
| Fireball | Four |
| Zap | Two |
Bridge Spam is a strategy in Clash Royale where you constantly play cards to keep your opponent under pressure. The idea is to make them slip up and then take advantage of their mistakes, or punish them if they manage to build up an elixir advantage. Many Bridge Spam decks include the Battle Ram and Bandit cards.
PEKKA Bridge Spam was once a very strong strategy, but it’s become less effective due to the rise of Bait decks. The traditional PEKKA deck, using Zap and Fireball, struggles to quickly deal with cards like Princess or Dart Goblin, and it can be slow to get the cards you need.
The version we’ve provided fits perfectly into today’s meta as it costs only 3.4 elixir!
Siege Decks
- Siege Decks focus on ranged attacks to fight from a safe distance.
- Best Siege Deck:
| Clash Royale Cards | Elixir Cost |
|---|---|
| Archers | Three |
| Electro Spirit | One |
| Knight | Three |
| X-Bow | Six |
| Tesla | Four |
| Fireball | Four |
| The Log | Two |
| Skeletons | One |
Siege decks play very differently than typical decks focused on directly attacking your opponent. Instead of rushing down your opponent’s towers, your goal is to destroy them with a building you place on your side of the arena. These buildings – the Mortar and X-Bow – are positioned safely out of range of your opponent’s towers, allowing you to damage theirs from a distance.
Because your main building can be easily defeated, these strategies include low-cost cards to protect it and quickly get back to building it before your opponent can respond with a counter. A great example of this is the Tesla and X-Bow deck, which has been very successful for a long time and remains one of the most powerful options.
Cycle Decks
- Cycle Decks rely on cheap cards to outcycle your opponents.
- Best Cycle Deck:
| Clash Royale Cards | Elixir Cost |
|---|---|
| Goblin Drill | Four |
| Knight | Three |
| Goblins | Two |
| Fire Spirit | One |
| Bomber | Two |
| Poison | Four |
| Snowball | Two |
| Cannon | Three |
Finally, there are Cycle decks. These are budget-friendly, featuring lots of low-cost cards – typically costing only one or two Elixir – and the entire deck usually comes in under 3.0 Elixir.
When using these card combinations, your goal is to get to your winning strategy faster than your opponent can react. If you pay attention to how much energy they have, you can consistently keep them on the defensive.
Many popular strategies use a single defensive building, but rely more on quick, inexpensive troops like Ice Spirit, Skeletons, and Ice Golem to protect against attacks. This means players need to carefully consider where they place these defensive units.
How to Build Your Own Deck in Clash Royale
It’s simpler to succeed in battles and rank higher if you use a strong, proven strategy. I’m sharing one I really like, but feel free to build your own – I definitely encourage trying new things! Here are a few tips to help you create your own strategy.
Focus on how you’ll destroy your opponent’s towers. Choose one or two cards that are your main damage dealers. If you’re using a strong, expensive card like Golem or Electro Giant, stick to a single win condition. However, if you’re using a cheaper, faster card like Miner, you can combine it with another damage-dealing card, such as Wall Breakers, for extra power.
Next, it’s important to have strong defenses against air attacks. Include at least two cards that can effectively counter flying units. Good options include the Musketeer, Archers, or Baby Dragon, but choose cards that work well with the rest of your deck. For instance, if you’re using a Golem, the Evolutionary Baby Dragon is a great choice because it helps defend and also supports your attacks.
After that, include a small tank and a low-cost defensive card in your deck. A popular and effective choice is the Knight and Skeletons, as they’re both inexpensive and dependable. If you want to strengthen your defenses further, consider adding a building as well.
It’s always a good idea to have two spells in your hand. Choose spells that complement your deck – for instance, Giant Snowball works well with cards like Goblin Drill or Balloon. Make sure you have both a low-cost spell for quick use and a more powerful one to deal with tougher enemies. This lets you either eliminate medium-health troops or significantly weaken them, making it easier for your smaller spells or area-of-effect attacks to finish them off.
We suggest testing out your own custom decks when you’re first learning the game. They can be unpredictable, so it’s best to experiment before you reach higher levels.
