Where Winds Meet offers a surprisingly rich story, drawing on numerous legends and cultural elements from the wuxia tradition. The initial chapter, Heaven Has No Pier, guides players through the Qinghe region and functions as a foundational backstory, establishing the origins of your character’s journey.
The first chapter of the game consists of four quests, and “For Whom Does He Return” is the last one. It’s a lengthy quest with few pauses, and features one of the game’s most challenging boss battles towards the end. If you’re struggling, we can help! Below you’ll find a complete walkthrough of this final quest in the Qinghe storyline.
For Whom Does He Return Quest Walkthrough

The quest ‘For Whom Does He Return’ begins automatically once you’ve found all the hidden treasures and finished the previous quest, ‘Dust on the Rhombus’.
Meet Yi Dao At The Ruined Temple
Your first task is to return to the ruined temple – the place where you defeated the Horse Dancer – and find Yi Dao. Talk to him, and you can learn about his history and Chu Qingquan. While you’re speaking with him, you’ll notice some mysterious figures arriving by boat and heading towards Blissful Retreat.
Attack On Blissful Retreat
Once you’ve shown Yi Dao you’re determined, get on his horse and ride to town to halt the invasion. You’ll soon be on your own, but after you recover, defeat the enemies and help Du Qiaoxian. She’ll explain that the village is caught in a maze, making it impossible for anyone to leave. After dealing with a few more attackers, follow the path with Du Qiaoxian and Yuan Jin’gang.
Next, you need to check out important locations around the village to find clues. There are four spots to look at – use the lines around your aiming tool to help you locate them.
Saving The Villagers

Now that you’ve found a good spot to survey the area, it’s time to start the rescue. There are three villagers trapped under debris in damaged buildings. You’ll need to fight through groups of Aureate soldiers to reach them, so be careful and watch out for ambushes. Follow the quest marker to find each villager, defeat the enemies nearby, and free them.
After that, rescue Ruby and Braid by going to where they are and defeating the enemies attacking them. Then, go to Sweetwine Tower, where you’ll find Yi Dao battling more Aureate soldiers, including an Aureate Commander. Help Yi Dao defeat them, and then talk strategy with him, Ruby, and the other villagers. Once everyone is safely inside Sweetwine Tower, you’ll need to fight off a few more waves of enemies.
The Final Stand
You try to reach Ruby’s flag, but don’t quite make it. Now, you and Yi Dao are surrounded by Aureate soldiers again. This time, you’ll face several waves of enemies, each led by an Aureate Commander. Prioritize eliminating the archers, then deal with the regular soldiers while allowing Yi Dao to fight the Commanders.
Qianye The Witch

Okay, so now we’re up against Qianye, the witch who caused all the trouble at Blissful Retreat! This fight is pretty tricky because it has different stages. The first part feels a lot like the Heartseeker boss fight we already did, but things get way harder in the second phase. She starts using really powerful attacks, like these huge sweeping slashes with her scythe – you definitely need to be ready for those!
During the boss fight, you can use Meridian Touch to block certain attacks and create an opening for damage, but mistiming it will cause significant damage and negative effects. Once Qianye’s health drops to around 50%, she’ll transport you to a mirror world to battle her other side.
Okay, so fighting Qianye this time around is pretty interesting! She’s got attacks that look familiar, but she mixes things up. Mostly, she’ll vanish and then come at you with a downward slash – it’s quick! And when you almost beat the white version, she does this crazy reality-bending thing and turns back into the red Qianye. You have to hit her a little more, and suddenly you’re back in the real world, watching Yi Dao continue the fight. It definitely keeps you on your toes!
I played through all the story bits fighting with Yi Dao, and a few days later in-game, my character actually became a horse! It was a wild turn of events, but pretty cool.
Homeward Path
It’s okay if this is happening! As Ruby’s horse, Clip-Clop, simply follow the on-screen marker to return to your player. After a brief scene plays, the quest will finish.
