While many expected Prime Video’s answer to HBO’s Game of Thrones to be its big-budget Lord of the Rings series, The Rings of Power, the platform’s true successor is actually a pair of lesser-known, mature-themed spinoffs from a popular online series. Though The Rings of Power is a large-scale fantasy show with a huge budget and a well-known brand, it’s these smaller shows that are truly filling the void left by Game of Thrones.
Despite its strengths, The Rings of Power actually feels more similar to HBO’s planned Harry Potter series than to Game of Thrones. Surprisingly, Prime Video’s biggest competition to Game of Thrones isn’t a grand, epic production, but rather a grittier, more mature show with daring content and a willingness to challenge typical fantasy storylines. Both The Rings of Power and the upcoming Harry Potter series are based on beloved, well-known franchises.
George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Fire and Ice series was well-known within fantasy circles, but Game of Thrones brought the books to a much wider audience. In a similar way, Prime Video’s Critical Role shows, The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein, are engaging fantasy series that both dedicated Dungeons & Dragons players and those new to the game can enjoy.
The Critical Role Shows Are Prime Video’s True Game of Thrones Replacements
Critical Role is a web series streamed on Twitch and YouTube where voice actors play Dungeons & Dragons. It began in 2015, before Dungeons & Dragons became widely popular again with shows like Stranger Things. As one of the earliest successful shows of its kind, Critical Role has grown into a major franchise, even leading to two animated fantasy series on Amazon Prime Video.
As a huge animation fan, I’ve been really enjoying The Legend of Vox Machina. It stars a fantastic voice cast – Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jaffe, Matthew Mercer, and Marisha Ray – and it’s actually based on the very first story arc from their popular web series. The show centers around Vox Machina, a group of heroes who are determined to get revenge after their home is destroyed. Laura Bailey’s character, Vex, a half-elf ranger, really takes the lead. It’s a wonderfully chaotic group – you’ve got a gnome bard, a grizzly bear (yes, really!), a half-elf rogue, and a Goliath barbarian all working together. What’s great is that even if you’ve never played Dungeons & Dragons, you can still jump in and enjoy a really exciting and surprisingly deep fantasy story. It perfectly captures the fun and unpredictability of a D&D campaign!
Despite being as intensely violent as the adult animated series Invincible, The Legend of Vox Machina doesn’t feel like it’s trying to shock viewers. Instead, similar to Game of Thrones, the show presents violence as a natural part of a harsh and unforgiving world. This makes the shocking moments feel impactful and raises the stakes in a story that’s also filled with humor.
The Wheel of Time or The Rings of Power Are Missing One Crucial Ingredient Vox Machina and Mighty Nein Share
This commitment helps both The Legend of Vox Machina and its spin-off, The Mighty Nein, maintain a mature tone, which was key to the initial success of Game of Thrones. It’s easy to forget now, with many similar shows available, but HBO’s adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s work was a gamble at the time – investing heavily in a series that wasn’t intended for younger viewers.
Unlike The Wheel of Time and The Rings of Power, which aim for a broad, family-friendly audience despite having intricate and sometimes dark storylines, Critical Role isn’t afraid to include intense violence and mature themes. Big fantasy franchises need to appeal to younger viewers, but Critical Role can take more chances with its storytelling. This allows shows like The Legend of Vox Machina and The Mighty Nein to feel like the true spiritual successors to the gritty and unconventional fantasy of Game of Thrones.
