The Beast in Me’s Claire Danes lands next lead role in Netflix series that’s a “modern romantic epic”

Claire Danes, known for her role in The Beast in Me, is joining the new Netflix series Lovesick. She will star as the lead and also work behind the scenes as an executive producer on the show, described as a sweeping, contemporary love story. Lovesick is inspired by the Israeli series The Best Worst Thing.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, the series centers around Annika (Danes), a highly accomplished breast cancer surgeon, whose life is turned upside down when she herself is diagnosed with the disease.

The show centers around Annika, a doctor, and her new patient, Nate, who is an up-and-coming politician. As their lives become increasingly connected, the series tackles big questions about love, family, health, and what it means to live – all while Annika is battling breast cancer.

I’m so excited to hear that Lovesick is happening! It skipped the pilot phase and went straight to being greenlit as a full series – apparently, there was a lot of competition to get it made. And even better, Sarah Treem, who created The Affair, is writing and running the show, which means it’s in really good hands!

I’m so excited to be working with the incredibly talented Claire Danes on this project,” said Treem. “We’ve wanted to collaborate for years, and the character of Annika feels like a perfect fit for both of us – a real dream role.

She explained that having the chance to explore big life questions – like life and death, family, love, getting older, being brave, science, and belief – through her work is a rare and meaningful opportunity, especially given everything happening in the world right now.

“We’re very grateful to Netflix for this significant commitment and we cannot wait to get going.”

Fans may remember Danes recently appearing in the Netflix thriller The Beast in Me. The eight-episode series came out last November and quickly became one of the platform’s most popular shows.

The series centers on Aggie Wiggs (Morena Baccarin), a writer grappling with grief and writer’s block after losing her son. Her curiosity is piqued when the affluent Nile Jarvis (Matthew Rhys) and his wife, Nina (Brittany Snow), become her new neighbors. As she investigates, will Aggie uncover the secrets of Nile’s mysterious background?

Digital Spy gave the thriller a four-star review, calling it captivating and suspenseful. They noted that while The Beast in Me isn’t full of big surprises, it’s still worth watching because it doesn’t depend on typical thriller clichés to keep you engaged.
