Superman’s James Gunn on Why DC Misses Comic-Con & Other Events

James Gunn on why DC Studios isn’t hosting Comic-Con panels

James Gunn recently told New Rockstars that DC doesn’t have a standard approach to events like San Diego Comic-Con. He explained that their decision to attend depends on the situation. According to Gunn, Comic-Con can be very worthwhile, especially if they have a strong trailer to showcase, but it’s a costly investment that needs to be carefully considered each time.

James Gunn pointed out that big, expensive promotional events aren’t always the best way to go. Sometimes, a simple post on social media – like sharing a script cover on Instagram – can be just as effective in generating buzz, and it costs next to nothing. Gunn, the director of the upcoming Superman film, stressed that every marketing choice needs to consider both how much attention it will get and how much it will cost. He also mentioned that attending conventions can be very time-consuming and expensive.

James Gunn’s limited time also affects how he works. He explained that traveling to events like Comic-Con takes time away from actually finishing his projects, like ‘Man of Tomorrow.’ Ultimately, he prioritizes the quality of his work over spending time on traditional promotion and marketing.

Starting in 2020, movie and TV studios have been discussing whether big in-person events like those at conventions are still worth the cost, compared to simply sharing news directly on social media. Many fans have specifically asked DC Entertainment to revive FanDome, their online event that allowed people all over the world to see their latest announcements.

Currently, Gunn seems to be focusing on keeping fans updated about his projects through social media and limited interviews with the press.
