A recent post from Netflix showing Henry Cavill as Superman in Black Adam has fans hoping he’ll reprise the role, especially with news that Warner Bros. Discovery might be sold. After the troubled production of 2017’s Justice League – where director Zack Snyder was replaced by Joss Whedon and the film was significantly altered, leading to negative reviews – Henry Cavill didn’t appear as Superman in any DC projects for five years. Even when HBO Max released Zack Snyder’s original vision of Justice League in 2021 with additional filming, Cavill wasn’t involved in the new scenes.
Many were surprised when Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stepped in to bring Henry Cavill back for a brief scene after the credits of Black Adam. This happened just a month before the movie came out in September 2022, and was intended to hint at a future battle between Black Adam and Superman. However, those plans changed when James Gunn was brought in to restart the DC Universe, and he later chose David Corenswet to take over the role of Superman, replacing Cavill.
Following a fan campaign on social media to reinstate Henry Cavill as Superman – using the hashtag #RestoreTheSnyderVerse – Netflix France acknowledged the actor’s return to the DC Universe with a post celebrating his appearance in Black Adam.
The streamer shared screenshots of Henry Cavill as Superman and Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam from the scene after the credits, asking fans who would win in a fight. They were also letting people know the movie is now available on Netflix in France.
There’s been recent talk about Warner Bros. Discovery, the parent company of DC Studios, potentially being sold. Several companies, including Netflix, Paramount Skydance, and Comcast, are rumored to be interested in making a bid.
I’m following this closely, and it looks like Paramount Skydance is currently the only one to have made a serious offer for Warner Bros. Discovery. Apparently, they offered $20 a share, but Warner Bros. Discovery thought it wasn’t enough and turned it down.
Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) announced it has received offers from several companies interested in buying it. The company’s board is now exploring all options, including a potential sale, to get the best possible value for its shareholders, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
It’s hard to say what a purchase would mean for DC’s direction, but the news will probably please many fans. For years, there’s been a strong online movement – using the hashtag #SellSnyderVerseToNetflix – hoping for this outcome.
A recent post from Netflix France followed a statement made by Zack Snyder on Instagram. Snyder affirmed that Henry Cavill is Superman, sharing a behind-the-scenes photo that appears to be from the making of Batman v Superman around 2014.
A Potential WBD Sale Probably Won’t ‘RestoreTheSnyderVerse’
Warner Bros. Discovery might be acquired, with companies like Netflix, Paramount Skydance, or Comcast as potential buyers, but any deal is likely a long way off and wouldn’t happen all at once.
As a huge Superman fan, when I heard Netflix was celebrating Henry Cavill, my first thought was, ‘Could this mean they’ll actually finish what Zack Snyder started?’ You know, pick up the story threads from Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Black Adam and really RestoreTheSnyderVerse? It was a hopeful thought, but honestly, it’s probably just wishful thinking. It seems unlikely Netflix is going to go down that road.
The post likely originated from a general Netflix social media account and wasn’t reviewed by top executives. It was probably intended to boost views of Black Adam on the platform by leveraging the online buzz around Henry Cavill’s Superman.
It’s still too early to say how a leadership change at Warner Bros. Discovery would affect DC Studios. A lot will likely depend on how well James Gunn’s DC Universe does in the future, as any new owner would probably be hesitant to disrupt a winning formula or interfere with a proven filmmaker like Gunn.
Zack Snyder has been working with Netflix for several years on his Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon projects. However, it doesn’t look like those franchises will continue with new sequels. Snyder is now focusing on a war drama called The Last Photograph and a movie about UFC fighting, titled Brawler.
