We’ve all encountered those popular, AI-created images of retro-style video game scenes that seem like they’re from games that don’t exist. But Project Shadowglass shows that creating an actual game with that same look and feel is definitely achievable.
Dominick John, the developer behind Project Shadowglass at Starhelm Studios, wants to be clear: this game isn’t made with AI. He’s building it in the Godot engine, and the results are impressive. It’s taking the kinds of short, AI-created game scenes you might have seen online and turning them into something much bigger and more detailed. John has shared several clips of the game, which he describes as a stealth-based immersive sim set in a dark fantasy world.
Imagine small villages on the edge of a kingdom, bathed in the warm light of evening under starry skies and a striking red moon. The upcoming game, Project Shadowglass, promises even more excitement than its beautiful visuals suggest. According to its Steam page, you’ll plan and execute daring robberies, sneak into secret places, and steal valuable artifacts. It boasts innovative 3D pixel art and a system where your choices really matter, with every action potentially revealing your identity.
Starhelm Studios describes the game as a tribute to classic immersive first-person stealth games like Thief, Deus Ex, and System Shock, and highlights its unique 3D pixel art style. I’m reminded of the visuals in Daggerfall, but what really excites me – and many other fans – is that Project Shadowglass emerged so quickly after similar AI-created worlds were considered unachievable.
The reaction to Project Shadowglass is proving people wrong. One commenter jokingly asked who previously claimed a game like this couldn’t be made, while another noted many artists said the AI-powered video’s concept was ‘impossible’ for a real game. Fortunately, it appears Starhelm Studios is proving them all wrong.
If you’re excited about this game like I am, please add Project Shadowglass to your wishlist and follow John online for the latest updates on this classic-style indie RPG.
