Disney+’s Wonder Man included a memorable cameo from a well-known character actor. The actor plays a humorous, exaggerated version of himself, a casting choice creator Andrew Guest says was a deliberate and ideal fit for the Marvel series.
How Joey Pantoliano got to cameo in Wonder Man
Joey Pantoliano appears in the new MCU miniseries Wonder Man as a satirical version of himself.
I’m really excited about Wonder Man! Yahya Abdul-Mateen II plays an actor who suddenly gets superpowers, and it throws his whole career into chaos. The show is a sharp satire of Hollywood, so when they brought in Joe Pantoliano to play a super-amped-up version of himself, it just worked. Apparently, producer Andrew Guest recently explained to ScreenRant how they came up with that brilliant cameo.
According to Guest, the creative team needed an experienced actor to contrast with Ben Kingsley’s character, Trevor Slattery, in Episode 2. They envisioned someone who represented the opposite of Slattery’s sensible life choices. Guest shared that when Marvel was considering various talented character actors, Joey King immediately stood out as the top choice for everyone. He called the role a particularly appealing casting opportunity.
After being asked to appear in Wonder Man, Joe Pantoliano enthusiastically helped develop his role. He looked over the script and made changes to ensure it matched his ideas. Director Destin Daniel Cretton said Pantoliano really enjoyed the concept. The actor even suggested details about his character’s life, playfully imagining the requests he’d get from family after showing off his character’s lavish Malibu home – a stark contrast to Pantoliano’s own, much simpler home in upstate New York. He joked that his relatives would start asking for money after seeing the mansion.
The creator was very impressed with the actor, describing him as a true professional with a wealth of experience. They mentioned his thoughtful approach to acting, his published writings, and countless stories, calling him a legend and saying it was a privilege to work with him.
You can now watch all episodes of Wonder Man on Disney+, including a memorable appearance by Joey Pantoliano.
