I need to know more about Elden Ring Nightreign’s mystery big boys – giant tree-like figures 5x the size of the second-biggest Souls creature, which FromSoftware explains almost nothing about
Initially, when I embarked on Elden Ring Nightreign, my primary focus was the gameplay, not the narrative. However, my curiosity is now piqued to an extent where I find myself compelled to unravel more about these enigmatic colossi that FromSoftware has left shrouded in mystery, given their towering presence in the Souls series, which dwarfs all previous creatures by a significant margin.
In the storytelling style of FromSoftware’s Nightreign, while Remembrance quests and Journal entries seem to provide a direct approach, there remain many enigmatic elements, such as the true identity of the colossal shadows that gradually transform into more distinct humanoid forms during your adventures.
In simpler terms, theories exist, such as they could be the spirits of high-ranking leaders summoned to battle with the Nightlords (a big thank you to our FromSoftware lore expert James Daly for this idea), but many questions are still unresolved. However, thanks to dataminer and FromSoftware expert Zullie the Witch, we now have a clearer insight into these enigmatic beings in a recently released video (see below).
In the world of Day 2, these colossal beings initially appear as mere shadows at expedition commencement. However, as the day unfolds, their presence becomes more tangible, resembling towering humanoid trees. Branches and roots sprout from their forms, while within them, ethereal blue branches glow, extending out of their heads, revealing grotesque human-like jaws adorned with teeth. Interestingly, these giants have fully modeled legs and feet, even though they remain unseen during regular gameplay.
It’s worth noting that Zullie the Witch approximates their height at a staggering two miles, which translates to approximately 3,450 meters or 11,319 feet. This makes them far larger than any of the previous colossal adversaries and creatures from FromSoftware’s Souls series, even surpassing Demon’s Souls’ gigantic Old One that stood at 628m. Additionally, she references the enormous buried skulls found in Elden Ring’s Caelid region, implying that the skeletons they belonged to would have been a monstrous 632m tall.
In simpler terms, Zullie the Witch remarks that these giants appear much smaller when compared to them directly, but if we consider something else for comparison, these tree-like giants are similar in size to the Erdtree, although it’s still much taller at approximately 4,452 meters.
Could something as substantial not hold considerable importance within the game, perhaps? However, be advised that I’m about to delve into specifics regarding one of Nightreign’s endings, so consider this a potential spoiler alert.
At the culmination of Nightreign, following the vanquish of Heolstor the Nightlord, daylight emerges, revealing a radiant light descending upon one of these colossal beings. Gradually rising, they gaze at the Erdtree before turning away and trekking in reverse direction. This was the initial ending I witnessed, and I must admit, I’m just as perplexed now as I was then. The tree-like giant shares a likeness with Heolstor, fueling speculation about their origin and connection to the Nightlords (if they aren’t somehow interconnected or identical entities).
As a dedicated gamer, I find myself eagerly anticipating any insights FromSoftware might share about their upcoming Nightreign DLC later this year. At the bare minimum, I can’t help but hope for an opportunity to engage in combat against some of those colossal giants – the thrill of toppling such a formidable adversary would be nothing short of exhilarating!
