Mission Impossible Director Reveals The One Scene That Had Him Terrified

Speaking about the 2025 releases of movies, Tom Cruise’s valiant and reckless portrayal of Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible series will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression. From performing death-defying underwater stunts to dangling from a biplane’s wing without a parachute, there were numerous instances where things could have easily gone awry during the filming of The Final Reckoning. In a recent interview, director Christopher McQuarrie revealed one particularly nerve-wracking scene that he was concerned might not come across effectively on screen.

Warning! Plot revelations for the film “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” lie ahead. If you haven’t watched it yet, catch it in cinemas now, and to stream the previous ones, consider subscribing to Paramount+.

Towards the climax of Tom Cruise’s intense biplane chase sequence opposite Esai Morales’ character Gabriel, the antagonist intended to escape via parachute. Unfortunately, in a tragic turn of events, he was fatally struck after colliding with the rudder. This moment remains one of the most impactful scenes in the film, eliciting gasps from cinema-goers. However, as revealed by McQuarrie to Empire, he felt considerable pressure to execute this scene flawlessly. He explained:

1. “During the final biplane chase scene with Tom Cruise and Esai Morales’ character Gabriel, the villain intended to bail out using a parachute. However, in a twist of fate, he collided fatally with the rudder instead.”
2. “In the movie’s climactic biplane chase sequence between Tom Cruise and Esai Morales as Gabriel, the antagonist aimed to jump out with a parachute. Tragically, he met his end after striking the rudder.”
3. “In the intense biplane chase sequence starring Tom Cruise against Esai Morales’ character Gabriel, the villain sought refuge in a parachute jump. Unfortunately, he was killed when he hit the rudder instead.”
4. “During Tom Cruise’s high-stakes biplane chase with Esai Morales as Gabriel, the bad guy planned to bail out. Alas, his fate took an unexpected turn as he struck and died by the rudder.”
5. “In the nail-biting biplane chase featuring Tom Cruise against Esai Morales’ character Gabriel, the villain aimed for a parachute escape. However, he met a grim end after hitting the rudder instead.”

We were consistently on edge, dreading that crucial moment. It took a tremendous amount of skill and creativity from numerous gifted individuals to ensure its success, and seeing it unfold as intended was truly rewarding. The tension was palpable for us, persisting until the premiere of the completed film in Tokyo before an international audience. Would it resonate? And when it did resonate in Tokyo, we breathed a sigh of relief, knowing that all our efforts had been worthwhile. We’re ready to take on new challenges.

Indeed, this is quite impressive. The aerial ballet performed by the bi-plane is nothing short of remarkable stunt work from Tom Cruise, and everyone who contributed to its planning and filming deserves recognition. Director McQuarrie has mentioned that it was extremely challenging for Cruise to cling to the wing of that plane at 8000 feet altitude, with winds reaching up to 140 miles per hour.

Indeed, the actor was using a slender wire to secure himself to the plane, but with such a prominent film star taking on this daring feat, the risks undeniably escalated to unprecedented levels.

Clearly, ensuring that the finale of the series provided gratification to viewers was crucial. Performing a significant stunt and concluding it with an unintended, somewhat humorous death posed a considerable risk. Nevertheless, it’s fortunate that McQuarrie recognized this outcome would deliver the “reward” he sought for the daring stunt upon observing audiences in Tokyo respond positively to it.

Impossible – The Final Reckoning” awarded the movie 4 out of 5 stars for being an “explosive” and “satisfying conclusion.

Indeed, the situation was dramatically intense as Ethan battled against Gabriel, suspended mid-air and navigating between two aircraft. To witness Gabriel’s demise in such a manner was both surprising and exhilarating since it was captivating to see the antagonist ultimately meet his end.

In the end, Christopher McQuarrie can feel content knowing that the hard work put into the biplane scene, culminating in the unforeseen demise of Esai Morales’ character Gabriel, was justified.
