The popular movie is returning to cinemas. This news follows Paramount’s recent confirmation that a third film is in the works.
Tom Cruise announced on social media on April 13th that both the original ‘Top Gun’ movie from 1986 and the 2022 sequel, ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ will be shown in theaters for one week starting May 13th.
Tom Cruise announced that two of his movies will return to theaters for a one-week engagement starting May 13th, sharing the movie posters with the announcement.
Top Gun Was a Cultural Phenomenon
Tom Cruise is now best known for playing the action hero Ethan Hunt in the popular Mission: Impossible series, which concluded in 2025 after nearly three decades. But before Mission: Impossible, Cruise first gained fame playing Lieutenant Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.
Okay, so the original Top Gun came out way back in 1986, and honestly, it didn’t get the greatest reviews at first. But it quickly became a total cult favorite! Tony Scott directed, and the script was a collaborative effort from Jim Cash and Jack Epps Jr. You also had the legendary Jerry Bruckheimer producing with Don Simpson, which probably explains a lot of the film’s energy!
This thrilling movie centers on Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a talented young Navy pilot, and his journey to Top Gun, the Navy’s elite flight school. There, alongside his co-pilot, Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, he gets the opportunity to hone his skills and become one of the best.
The movie also featured Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer, and Tom Skerritt. It was a huge success, earning $357.4 million with a production budget of just $15 million.
After over twenty years, the Top Gun academy was revived with the 2022 film, Top Gun: Maverick. Tom Cruise returned as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, and Val Kilmer reprised his role as Iceman. The film was directed by Joseph Kosinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, Tom Cruise, Paramount CEO David Ellison, and frequent Cruise collaborator Christopher McQuarrie, who also directs the Mission: Impossible films.
In addition to returning favorites, Top Gun: Maverick featured new cast members like Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman, and Ed Harris. While the original Top Gun was a hit, Maverick surpassed all expectations, earning $1.49 billion globally. This made it the second-highest-grossing film of 2022 and Tom Cruise’s most successful movie to date.
Top Gun 3 Is Officially Happening
Ever since the huge success of the 2022 movie, people have been discussing a follow-up. Tom Cruise was always planned to reprise his role as Maverick, and Christopher McQuarrie confirmed in May 2025 that he was helping to write the screenplay. Paramount Pictures officially announced the sequel at this year’s CinemaCon.
Jerry Bruckheimer will return as producer, and Ehren Kruger is once again writing the screenplay. Director Joseph Kosinski confirmed Kruger is currently working on the script, collaborating with contacts at the Navy and Lockheed Martin. He added that Kruger is enthusiastic about the project, and they’re eager to see how it develops.
Top Gun 3 doesn’t have an official release date.
