Alan Ritchson is having a fantastic career moment. The trailer for his new action movie, Runner, is out now, and he has several other projects coming up, including the holiday comedy The Man with the Bag and a biopic about Navy SEAL Mike Thornton. Plus, he continues to star as Reacher – Season 4 is on its way, and he’ll also appear in a supporting role in the Neagley spin-off.
Alan Ritchson had a few memorable roles before becoming a big star. Many fans enjoyed his performances as the superhero Hawk in Titans, and some recognized him as the young Aquaman on Smallville. But he first gained a large following playing Thad Castle, the football captain in the comedy series Blue Mountain State. Even though that show ended years ago, it’s seeing a resurgence in popularity thanks to Ritchson’s current success.
‘Blue Mountain State’ Is a Feel-Good Satire of College Leisure Culture

I have to say, Alan Ritchson is a fantastic action star – he really reminds me of a modern-day Arnold Schwarzenegger, but somehow even more approachable. He’s got this incredible presence, being so tall and confident, but he’s just so likable. While he’s proven he can play the tough guy – the arrogant heroes and monster hunters – I think he really shines when he gets to be funny. Especially in Blue Mountain State! The writing by Adam Romano – you might know him as Adam from How I Met Your Mother – let Alan show off his gift for quick, witty banter, and it was hilarious. He’s just a naturally charismatic performer.
Created for the Spike Network, Blue Mountain State follows the lives of the “Mountain Goats,” the football team at Blue Mountain State University. These college students aren’t focused on academics – it’s a constant party! The show is over-the-top and often crude, similar to American Pie, but it manages to be genuinely funny. It embraces childish humor, and surprisingly, it’s often funnier than more highly-rated comedies.
The comedy isn’t always successful, but the show maintains a fun, lively feeling, boosted by its exaggerated portrayal of sex, parties, hazing, and sports. Ritchson plays a character with a goofy, childlike energy, constantly blurting out ridiculous things. His silliness peaks in a strange scene where he angrily accuses someone of stealing a personal item – it’s something you really have to see to believe. Darin Brooks, known from Days of Our Lives, adds stability as Alex Moran, the only sensible quarterback in a sea of craziness.
There’s More ‘Blue Mountain State’ to Enjoy

If you enjoy Blue Mountain State, be warned – finishing all three seasons might leave you feeling a little empty, as it’s a truly exceptional show, especially compared to what’s on TV today. Fortunately, the story doesn’t end there! After the series finale, fans were eager for more, so the creators started a Kickstarter campaign to fund a sequel movie. They successfully raised $1.5 million by May 11, 2014, allowing them to make Blue Mountain State: The Rise of Thadland, which came out in February 2016. The movie picks up right where Season 3 left off, with senior Alex Moran throwing a huge party for Thad after finding out Thad’s been drafted into the NFL.
Fans have even more to look forward to! Deadline reports that Amazon MGM Studios is quickly moving forward with a revival of the show. Alan Ritchson also recently gave an update while at the Daytona 500.
I absolutely loved playing Thad – it’s been the most enjoyable role of my career. We’re currently developing a sequel with Amazon and I’m working to fit a fourth season into my schedule. I really believe it will be the best season of the show yet – it’s incredibly funny and we’ve found a great way to bring back familiar characters in a way that feels fresh and relevant.
Okay, so Blue Mountain State was already a pretty big deal after its run on Spike, and it really took off when it hit Netflix – it became a total cult classic. But now, get this: Amazon’s bought the whole thing! Apparently, they’re huge fans of Alan Ritchson – they see him as a major star and want to keep giving him awesome roles. It makes sense, he’s fantastic!
This franchise has a lot to offer with 39 episodes, a movie already out, and another season possibly coming soon. Be prepared for some truly shocking and unexpected twists and turns!
