Elden Ring Nightreign servers shut down this morning ‘to improve expedition matchmaking’ but it’s royally screwed some unprepared players
This past week has proven challenging for Elden Ring Nightreign, but not due to lack of interest; on the contrary, it’s been a massive success with over 3.5 million copies sold in merely five days. However, its performance hasn’t quite met expectations.
In addition to solo missions being difficult, the most irritating aspect of Nightreign has been its player matching system. While single player queuing can be manageable if you select all bosses, teaming up as a duo is nearly impossible to find another player. The other night I waited an hour for one more player to join my expedition, and it seems I’m not alone; even Ted Litchfield encountered the same problem, waiting two hours for the matchmaking to work.

However, FromSoftware isn’t simply dismissing these concerns. In an attempt to mitigate problems, the developers have proposed several potential solutions for players to test out, assuring everyone that they are actively working on it. At present, this solution is being implemented, but some players remain unsatisfied.
It’s been announced by FromSoftware that they will perform server maintenance on June 6, 2025, to enhance the matching process for Nightreign expeditions, especially those with active Remembrance. Unfortunately, some players might have missed this information.
Affectionate_Elk7258 exclaims, “They shut down the server just as I was about to defeat Libra,” followed by a long series of frustrated sounds.
I just solo’d the final Nightlord as executor seconds before the servers shut down, what a hell of a fight from r/Nightreign
This post’s comments are brimming with players sympathizing sincerely as they too suffered from the maintenance issues. One player laments, “I had almost defeated Augur with the locust boost, I share your misery.” Meanwhile, others express frustration about how their teammates were unexpectedly eliminated like Thanos’ snap, leaving them isolated in Nightreign to perish.
Despite the servers going down, there was a bit of good news – one player, known as Executor, successfully completed the final Nightlord battle all by themselves just before the shutdown. “I managed to solo the last Nightlord as Executor mere seconds before the servers closed, what an intense fight!” voidsenight exclaimed. “To be honest, the stress of being booted back to the main menu was greater than if I had actually lost the battle. I’m not sure if singleplayer disconnects you from your session or not, but I didn’t want to take any chances,” voidsenight added with a laugh.
Although FromSoftware made a previous announcement prior to server maintenance, there’s no mention of this event on their Steam page. In truth, I wouldn’t have realized anything was amiss without all the upset players sharing their lost progress.
Initially, the maintenance was intended to last merely a few hours, implying that Nightreign’s servers ought to be functioning smoothly at this point. However, it’s essential to stay vigilant for any maintenance alerts or potential server downtime, as nobody wants the frustration of losing a hard-earned victory due to unexpected updates or server shutdowns.
