The thoughtful and visually striking action-RPG, Soulframe, has been updated with a new pirate class! Players can now choose the Duelo pact, which focuses on fast-paced sword fighting and includes skills like dodging with a phantom duplicate, slowing enemies with stylish swordplay, and even using a flintlock pistol. The update also adds a spooky shipwreck environment, new enemies to battle, another challenging infiltration mission, and various improvements to make the game smoother and more enjoyable.
I jokingly complained to James, “Why are so many games suddenly about pirates?” He didn’t even notice, as he was busy writing about the new pirate game, Corsair Cove. Even his parrot seemed to be making fun of me with a pirate-themed pun! Feeling defeated, I went to find some peace, but was immediately overwhelmed by the sounds of another pirate game, Windrose. I felt like I was drowning in pirate-themed chaos. I called out to Mark for a drink to help me cope, but nobody had seen him in days – the last anyone saw, he was lost at sea, seemingly obsessed with Assassin’s Creed Black Flag.
Soulframe – Preludes 14: The Duelo Teaser
Soulframe has been in development for a long time, but the creators – known for their elaborate language in Warframe – don’t call it ‘early access’. They release updates called ‘Preludes’ instead. The latest, ‘Duelo’, starts a new quest called ‘Wreck of Mestra Carmo’, sending you on a seafaring adventure to find a lost fencing master. To finish the quest, you’ll explore shipwrecks and collect pieces of a Duelo Ribbon, which unlocks a series of shipboard duels. Winning these duels will allow you to create a pirate costume.
Okay, so even if you’re totally burned out on pirate games (seriously, there are so many!), the Duelo update has some cool stuff for those of us who need a break from the sea. I’m really excited about the Mirifuir Castle Siege Encounter – you get to sneak into a fortress and mess with some rituals while also grabbing materials to make a new sword, the Espadarte. And get this – there’s also the Fallen Ode Skytower, this huge citadel that fell from the sky and is now crawling with… well, let’s just say nasty aliens. You can find three new weapons in these places, and the coolest one has to be this curved blade you actually pull from the remains of a giant worm boss, the Rovgot Wyrm. Sounds intense, right?
The game has been updated with several improvements to enhance player experience. These include five new side quests available at World Tree job boards, a redesigned journal and codex, and changes to how Rune powers are activated – now linked to fully charged heavy attacks. Players can also uncover the backstory of a character named Orlick within the Nightfold area. A detailed list of all changes is available in the full update notes, which are quite extensive and even include some rhyming text. (Note: a potentially offensive statement has been omitted from this paraphrase.)
I’m not quite sure what people mean by ‘quality-of-life’ improvements in games anymore. It feels like just adding more things to do is being called an improvement, and it’s more than just making the game more enjoyable. Also, why are so many games coming out with a pirate theme? Did all the developers get together and watch ‘Black Sails’ a while back?
