Elden Ring Nightreign Augur boss guide: How to beat Maris

If you’ve mastered strategies against Maris, Fathom of Night, the Augur expedition in Elden Ring Nightreign becomes relatively straightforward, albeit somewhat monotonous. However, if your team lacks the necessary skills or you fail to counter its wipe mechanic, it can become one of the most challenging encounters in the game.

To access the secret final boss, you’ll first need to conquer a total of four Nightreign bosses, and considering that Augur is relatively simpler once you grasp their tactics, it would be wise to focus on them initially. Here’s a rundown of what you should know to subdue this aquatic beast effectively.

Elden Ring Nightreign Augur tips

Similar to other Nightlords, your duties begin immediately upon joining an expedition, requiring you to explore optimal rune farming locations and seek out legendary weapons. To effectively prepare for Maris during the Augur expedition, consider these suggestions:

1. Familiarize yourself with efficient rune farming routes.
2. Equip yourself with powerful weapons that could potentially be upgraded to legendary status.
3. Gather necessary resources and items for your journey.
4. Train and improve your skills to increase your chances of success.
5. Stay alert and vigilant, as you never know what challenges may lie ahead on the Augur expedition.

  1. Get a lightning weapon or spells

It’s not unexpected that Maris, modeled after sea creatures, is vulnerable to lightning damage. Attacks with this attribute deal extra damage, making them quite appealing! Unlike certain other bosses, there’s no unique interaction when exploiting Maris’ weakness, but a swift victory makes it simpler on your healing item stock. Additionally, you can initiate combat with a starting weapon that inflicts lightning damage if you have the right relic, so don’t forget to check!

  1. Ranged weapons are a must

Maris continually circles the arena, which makes combat challenging for melee characters, making them quite frustrating to battle against. In my experience, while I managed to defeat them, it took significantly more time compared to when using ranged weapons. Consequently, even a standard bow is more effective than a lightning sword in this particular fight.

In this setting, the optimal builds for Nightreign Ironeye and Recluse truly excel. Being proficient in ranged attacks, they make excellent choices for dealing damage regardless of Maris’ location. For characters more accustomed to melee combat like Wylder or Raider, remember that powerful bows are an option since they scale based on your strength stat. Similarly, Revenant and Duchess can employ magic to deal damage from a distance as well, and Executor can wield a bow with his exceptional dexterity level too.

  1. Get sleep resistance and magic damage negation

Overcoming the Augur expedition’s final hurdle primarily lies with Maris’ pesky sleep-inducing ability. Although its sleep field and tear drops could potentially eliminate you instantly, elevated resistance to sleep is nevertheless crucial for survival. To boost your resistance, acquiring the “all resistances up” passive after defeating a Night boss or the Clarifying Horn Charm talisman will be beneficial. Similarly, any magic damage protection you come across would prove useful as well.

  1. Level up and get flask upgrades

For the Augur expedition, it’s straightforward once you’ve gathered all necessary items. However, I’d advise being at least level 10 (preferably 12) before encountering Maris. This is primarily to boost your damage output with improved stat scaling. Faster fights mean less time chasing Maris and prolonging the battle. Gather as many runes as possible from defeated bosses for passive upgrades, and don’t forget to collect flask charges by visiting churches for additional resources.

How to beat Maris, Fathom of Night in Elden Ring Nightreign

Much like battling Libra in Equilibrious Beast, selecting the correct team composition is crucial, as Maris seldomly lands. Here are my suggestions for your team:

1. Fliers or airborne units, to keep up with Maris and maintain mobility.
2. Fast-moving melee units, to quickly catch up to Maris when she’s on the move.
3. Ranged attackers with high agility, to effectively target Maris from a distance while keeping pace.
4. Healers or support units, to keep your team in top shape during the battle.

  • Ironeye: He’s the premier ranged character, letting you actually hit Maris more than once per calendar year. Not only that, but his ultimate is great for interrupting Maris’ most troublesome attack when they create a sleep aura. He can also mark enemies so they take increased damage from the entire team.
  • Duchess: Her Restage skill not only repeats recent damage against targets (including the affinity boost from using lightning against Maris), but can also reapply status ailments. Plus, Duchess can easily use staves for ranged damage.
  • Recluse: Alongside Ironeye, she’s the next best ranged damage dealer, with some very potent spells. Her ultimate also gives your team healing and FP restoration, which is a lifesaver in such a drawn-out fight.

Instead of suggesting these characters as the best choice, you could opt for Wylder (or alternatively, Raider) who excels with a powerful bow due to their strength scaling abilities. Wylder’s grappling hook offers improved mobility, and his ultimate ability can effectively counter Maris’ sleep attack, similar to Ironeye’s function.

Now is the moment to take action against Maris, primarily by barraging them with arrows, dodging some assaults, and responding effectively to a specific maneuver.

  1. Watch out for these attacks

Maris typically acts as a passive boss, staying out of reach to call upon allies who can wear you down. However, there’s one move – the sleep aura – that you must learn to counteract promptly to avoid trouble. If your Augur expedition is unsuccessful, it could be due to this attack. Additionally, keep in mind that Maris doesn’t have a second phase; instead, they produce more jellyfish and tentacles over time.

  • Jellyfish: Particularly at the start of the fight, Maris summons hordes of jellyfish that swarm towards you. Get too close and they’ll blow up, dealing a fair amount of damage, especially if you get caught between multiple. They’re slow, so they’re easy enough to run away from and kite around while you focus on Maris, though you can also kill them if you need to.
  • Spin charge: Occasionally, Maris will actually attack you itself, diving to the ground and spinning. The attack itself is quite easy to dodge and avoid, though be careful not to run into a jellyfish (or a tentacle) in the process.
  • Tentacle: Later in the fight, Maris begins to summon tentacles across the arena. Like the jellyfish, these are more obstacles than attacks, though they do a surprising amount of damage. You’re best off staying away from them altogether, and only kill them if they get in your way.
  • Wave: Maris can create large waves of water that cover a fair distance. To avoid them, you can either block or dodge towards them.
  • Nap time: At key points, Maris will lie down and start channelling a sleep aura that builds this annoying and dangerous ailment. To avoid getting put to sleep (and taking damage as you are), you need to stagger Maris using ultimate abilities or by applying enough lightning damage, though the former is more reliable.
  • Teardrop bombs: Once you’ve got Maris below 50% health, it’ll start creating bombs that slowly fall to the ground. These deal massive damage and cause sleep buildup in a sizable radius. You have two options to deal with these: either destroy them before they hit the ground or run far away. These aren’t too hard to destroy using ranged attacks, but you’ll want to make a quick team decision, as it’s too much for just one player to handle—unless you’re Ironeye.
  1. Interrupt Maris’ sleep aura

Remember what I said earlier? It’s crucial to emphasize it again: To defeat Maris’ area-of-effect sleep attack, you should save your ultimate abilities for the occasion. If you don’t, you might either be instantly wiped out by the explosion or succumb soon after due to subsequent attacks. This tactic is similar to fighting Libra; it’s the primary cause of failure in this battle. Therefore, it’s wise to reserve Ironeye’s Single Shot for long-range defense against such an attack.

  1. Run and kite constantly

Because Maris transforms the entire arena into a dangerous maze of jellyfish and tentacle traps, it’s crucial to keep moving almost incessantly. Fortunately, you can move and even fire arrows with bows or cast spells simultaneously. This not only gives you an advantage due to the range, but also emphasizes the importance of mobility when dealing with this airborne adversary.
