As a sci-fi fan, I can confidently say that The Expanse is a landmark adaptation for Prime Video – truly one of the best shows the genre has offered us in years. And now, Prime is taking on another massive project from the same minds – James S.A. Corey, the duo behind The Expanse. This new series is even bigger and bolder in scope, promising a truly ambitious story that I’m already excited about.
Prime Video successfully adapted James S.A. Corey’s The Expanse into a well-regarded six-season series, so fans have high hopes for their upcoming series based on Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck’s The Captive’s War. What’s particularly promising about this new adaptation is its scope – while The Expanse focused on human conflicts, The Captive’s War will explore a much larger galactic setting.
At its best, The Expanse broadened its scope with discoveries like the Protomolecule and Ring Gates, but it always remained focused on its characters and their personal journeys. The Captive’s War, however, presents a different scenario, where humanity is small and vulnerable compared to the powerful Carryx Empire.
As a huge sci-fi fan, I’d say The Expanse really holds its own against other big space adventures – it’s just as epic and creative as anything else out there. But honestly, when I think about the incredible world-building in The Captive’s War – all those different alien species with their unique societies and roles – The Expanse feels a little more focused, a little less sprawling in comparison. It’s still fantastic, but The Captive’s War just went all-out with its alien cultures.
As a film buff, what really struck me about The Captive’s War wasn’t the typical ‘save the world’ plot. Instead of focusing on grand themes like humanity’s downfall, the movie really digs into what it’s like to be conquered – the social dynamics of just trying to survive under a much more powerful enemy. It’s less about stopping the bad guys and more about how people adapt and live when they’ve lost.
The Captive’s War’s Galactic Premise Proves It Isn’t Just The Expanse With Bugs
Although The Expanse and The Captive’s War are both written by the same authors and fall into the same genre, leading to some obvious comparisons, they ultimately differ in substantial ways beyond those initial similarities.
Rather than focusing solely on the technical aspects of space travel – like heat and gravity – The Captive’s War delves into the strange and illogical society of the Carryx. It deliberately avoids making easy connections to real-world politics and instead presents conflicts from a completely alien perspective, showing the difficulties of living under a ruthless, indifferent power.
Many fans have noted that The Expanse shares similarities with Lovecraftian horror, particularly because the Protomolecule remains largely a mysterious and incomprehensible force. In contrast, The Captive’s War takes a different approach. It clearly explains the nature of its alien species, rather than simply using them to drive the human conflicts in the story.
Considering how distinct The Captive’s War is from The Expanse, it actually resembles Star Wars more closely. While it doesn’t have the same epic, black-and-white morality as Star Wars, the way it depicts space travel, civilizations, and alien empires shares several similarities.
The upcoming series seems poised to stand out in the sci-fi genre because of key differences between it and both The Expanse and The Captive’s War. Hopefully, the new adaptation will highlight these differences, allowing it to be judged on its own merits and avoid direct comparisons to The Expanse.
