Is this a place where I can open up about something personal? Have I completed Elden Ring yet? Not by a long shot; the furthest I’ve progressed is battling Margit. Despite investing countless hours in The Lands Between, it never truly captivated me. I may return to it someday, but there’s a part of me that questions if I might need a break from Souls-like games for a spell. If Sekiro 2 ever comes out, though, I’d devour it instantly.
It seems to me that many people might prefer FromSoft to continue focusing on its strengths rather than venturing into new territories, as the current Steam reviews for Elden Ring: Nightreign suggest. Despite being FromSoft’s lowest-rated game on Steam so far, it still has a Mixed rating with 66% of its user reviews being positive. However, this shouldn’t cause too much concern.
Compared to other games from the FromSoftware catalog, Nightreign isn’t exceptional and lags behind. The only title that ranks below it is Dark Souls 3’s Ashes of Ariandel DLC, with a 59% positive rating. In terms of complete games, Nightreign takes the last position.
It’s no wonder that Nightreign has been a contentious topic within our PCG team. While I haven’t had the chance to play it myself, some of us are quite enthusiastic, while others express reservations. Even those initially keen on it took some time to fully appreciate it. Our reviewer, Tyler Colp, commended Nightreign in his Elden Ring review, but acknowledged that its innovative, multiplayer-centric gameplay made it a more unusual, complex experience compared to its predecessors.
As a diehard fan, I can’t say I’m surprised to witness the familiar divide unfold on Steam. One post reads, “This isn’t the Elden Ring game you’re expecting,” while another exclaims, “Immediately wiped out by Fell Omen in under a minute. 10/10 Elden Ring experience.” I’m eager to see if opinions will soften as players acclimate to the game, or if hardcore FromSoftware fans won’t embrace its cooperative elements like they have with past titles. It seems destined to linger at the bottom of leaderboards… unless and until Duskbloods graces us with a PC release.
