I was completely obsessed with “Heated Rivalry,” but honestly, I think Prime Video’s new sports romance might be even better! It’s based on a book everyone’s talking about, and it’s seriously sweet. I’m so excited that HBO picked it up so quickly – it means people all over the world will get to root for Ilya and Shane just like I did, and it’s coming out before the Canadian release, which is awesome!
Good news for fans! Season 2 of Heated Rivalry is confirmed to premiere on Crave and HBO Max in April 2027. The cast has also signed on for three seasons total, which means a third season is very probable. If the timing between seasons 1 and 2 holds true, we can expect season 3 to arrive around mid-to-late 2028.
While fans eagerly await its release, the delay opens the door for other exciting sports romances to gain popularity. For example, Prime Video has already announced an adaptation of the LGBTQ+ novel Cleat Cute, titled Playing the Field.
Everyone’s been eagerly awaiting the TV adaptation of Cleat Cute. The show centers around the lives – both personal and romantic – of four players on a women’s soccer team. At its heart is the evolving relationship between Phoebe, a bright and talented player, and Grace, the team captain, who start as rivals but develop a friends-with-benefits connection.
Since fans will have to wait for new seasons of Heated Rivalry, the show has a chance to plan a fantastic and passionate love story with a satisfying outcome for everyone involved.
Hockey Goes Up Against Soccer In This Spicy Sports Romance Rivalry
Given how popular ice hockey romances are, Heated Rivalry is expected to be a strong contender in the spicy sports romance genre. Ice hockey is currently the most popular sport featured in these types of books and shows. The exciting, fast-paced game combined with developing romantic connections makes for a compelling story.
Ice hockey is a naturally competitive and often physical sport, which lends itself well to the popular “alpha male” and “bad boy” tropes often found in romance novels. However, Heated Rivalry stands out by flipping these expectations: Ilya challenges the typical alpha-male character, and Shane defies the “golden boy” stereotype. These unique character choices make Heated Rivalry a leading contender in the spicy, enemies-to-lovers sports romance genre.
Despite initial doubts, Playing the Field could become very popular, and here’s why. Soccer is the most-loved sport worldwide – most countries prefer it over others – so it’s likely to draw a large and enthusiastic international audience.
Soccer is becoming increasingly popular in the United States, a demographic that Hollywood is eager to reach. Shows like Apple TV’s Ted Lasso and the achievements of the US Women’s Soccer Team have contributed to this growth. With the fourth season of Ted Lasso focusing on a women’s soccer team, audiences are likely to be even more receptive to a show like Playing the Field. The exciting, fast-paced action of soccer will also help keep viewers hooked.
The new Prime Video series is designed to resonate with a diverse audience. The central romance features a same-sex couple, which should appeal to LGBTQ+ viewers. Additionally, the main characters are established as neurodivergent, and if this is maintained in the show, it will likely attract that community as well.
Playing The Field Will Be The Spicy Sports Romance For Sapphics
After the movie Heated Rivalry came out, many in the sapphic community wondered if there was anything similar. The general consensus was no, especially when it came to seeing that kind of story on screen. While Bottoms included sapphic crushes and a fight club, it was primarily a comedy set in high school, rather than a focused romance.
While nothing quite matches the intensity of Heated Rivalry, the 2020 Canadian web series Slo Pitch comes closest. Though presented as a mockumentary about softball, it features some romantic tension. However, Slo Pitch is a shorter series and lacks the deep emotional connection, competitive drama, and passionate intimacy found in Heated Rivalry. It also didn’t reach as broad an audience.
Fortunately, Playing the Field delivers a steamy sports romance specifically for fans of sapphic relationships, comparable to the popular novel Heated Rivalry. The book features well-developed characters with realistic emotional depth and unique personalities. The connection between Grace and Phoebe feels genuine and grows naturally from friendship into something deeper, much like the relationship between Ilya and Shane.
The steamy scenes in Cleat Cute are comparable to those in Heated Rivalry. They’re written with LGBTQ+ readers in mind, openly celebrating enthusiastic consent and sexual enjoyment. It’s a refreshing change from typical lesbian erotica that seems designed to appeal to a male gaze.
What Spicy LGBTQ+ Sports Romances Should Streamers Adapt Next?
If Playing the Field does as well as Heated Rivalry, we might see a surge in LGBTQ+ sports romances on TV. It’s clear people are interested in these kinds of stories, and there’s a wealth of popular LGBTQ+ sports romance novels that could be turned into shows. A few books, in particular, seem especially well-suited for adaptation.
I can’t stop recommending Kiera Andrews’ Kiss and Cry – it would make a fantastic TV series! The romance is captivating, and the author clearly did a lot of research on figure skating, making it feel very authentic. Plus, the chemistry between Theo and Henry, as enemies who fall for each other, is just wonderful.
Melissa Brayden’s First Position promises a captivating and steamy sapphic sports romance, with a strong focus on the dedication and competition within professional dance. Fans who enjoyed the dynamic between Grace and Phoebe in Cleat Cute will likely love the rivalry between Natalie and Anastasia, as both couples showcase a classic ‘grumpy-sunshine’ relationship.
Rachel Spangler’s Edge of Glory would make a great sports romance TV series, focusing on the lives of two professional snowboarders. While snowboarding isn’t as widely popular as sports like hockey or skating, which might affect its potential audience, the story itself is definitely worth bringing to the screen.
If you’re looking for similar books, consider Eden Finley’s Face Offs & Cheap Shots, Emily Rath’s Pucking Around, and Chloe Liese’s Everything for You. Face Offs & Cheap Shots and Pucking Around are both steamy hockey romances like Heated Rivalry, though Pucking Around stands out a bit as it features a polyamorous relationship. Everything for You has a similar vibe to Cleat Cute, but with a different dynamic. All three stories have potential to be adapted for the screen.
