Ah, the age-old debate of who gets to control the future: the elite few or the masses? According to a recent Harris poll commissioned by Digital Currency Group (DCG)—an entity whose name might just make you think of some secret society—almost three-quarters of Americans, in their infinite wisdom, believe that decentralized AI holds the key to progress. At least, that’s what they told the pollsters. What do they know, right?
The survey, which involved 2,036 Americans aged 18 and above (because, as we all know, the opinion of every random person on the street is invaluable), found that 56% of respondents are in favor of decentralized AI, and a staggering 77% reckon that it’s somehow “more beneficial to society.” Oh, how noble! A truly altruistic bunch, those survey-takers. 😏
“Three-quarters of Americans agree that the transformative power of AI would benefit more people if it weren’t concentrated in the hands of a few major players,” remarked Julie Stitzel, DCG’s policy vice president. You know, just a casual observation—nothing groundbreaking, just a whole bunch of people not trusting tech giants. Shocking, right?
But wait, there’s more! A glorious 67% of respondents also believe that centralized AI is probably more biased (because, naturally, what’s more trustworthy than a system controlled by a select few?). 63% think centralized AI serves Big Tech far more than the average Joe, and, of course, is more likely to misuse your precious data. It’s almost as if they think tech giants have… ulterior motives. Ridiculous, right? 😏
Decentralized AI Gains Traction (But Will It Survive the Giant Machine?)
In a brave attempt to slay the corporate Goliath that is Big Tech, key players and self-proclaimed AI gurus are screaming from the rooftops about the wonders of decentralized AI. Chris Miglino, the co-founder and CEO of DNA Fund (don’t ask me what that is, I’m just here for the drama), has boldly declared that decentralized AI could one day surpass Bitcoin. Yes, you read that right: Bigger than Bitcoin. I mean, it sounds a little too good to be true, but who am I to question such grandiose predictions? 🤔
And then there’s Ben Goertzel, the founder and CEO of SingularityNET, who’s been going on about AI decentralization since the 90s. Because, naturally, he saw this coming way before any of us. If artificial general intelligence—the stuff of sci-fi dreams—is ever going to truly benefit humanity, it has to be decentralized from day one. So, let’s just take his word for it, shall we?
Oh, and don’t forget about Paolo Adroino, the CEO of Tether. On May 5th, he casually dropped that Tether is launching an AI platform that will allow payments in USDT and BTC. You know, just another little thing that will undoubtedly change the world—if you’re into that sort of thing.
And last but not least, Thinkagents.ai, the company behind some mysterious open-source framework for building on-chain agents that work across decentralized networks. Over 70 crypto firms are already on board, including Yuga Labs and Magic Eden. Will they create a utopian future? Will they destroy humanity? Who knows! I’m just here for the ride. 🤷♂️
