The upcoming movie, How to Train Your Dragon 2, is expected to be another exciting adventure, but a recent change in the cast has one actor thinking about their role in future installments.
The 2014 animated film How to Train Your Dragon 2 was a major hit, earning over $622 million globally and winning a Golden Globe for Best Animated Film. It was also nominated for an Academy Award and boasts a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film features a talented voice cast, including Jay Baruchel, Gerard Butler, Cate Blanchett, Kit Harington, Jonah Hill, America Ferrera, Kristen Wiig, and Djimon Hounsou.
Several original actors, like Gerard Butler and Cate Blanchett, are reprising their roles in the live-action remake. However, some characters have been recast, with Djimon Hounsou being replaced as Drago. Hounsou recently spoke with Ash Crossan from ScreenRant for Thrash about the chances of him returning to the How to Train Your Dragon series, following the news of the recasting, leaving fans curious about his future involvement.
ScreenRant asked Djimon Hounsou if he’d be interested in returning to the ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ universe, even with a new actor taking on the role of Drago. They wanted to know if there had been any discussions about him appearing in the upcoming live-action film.
That was a really enjoyable experience, and it was my first time working on an animated film. I quickly learned that animated performances require a much larger-than-life approach. I’m now just waiting to see what happens next, either patiently or impatiently!
Whitney Peak: He’s waiting.
Djimon Hounsou would enjoy returning to that show, and he thinks his kids would really have fun if he did.
The role of Drago, originally played by Hounsou, was given to Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (known for his work in shows like Trapped and Severance, and the film The Deep) in the live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon 2. In the original animated sequel from DreamWorks, Drago Bludvist is the main villain – a ruthless and power-hungry tyrant who wants to enslave dragons, build an army, and take over the world.
Whether Hounsou will continue to be involved isn’t certain, but he definitely wants to preserve his work in these popular animated films and also participate in the upcoming live-action versions, both for himself and for his family.
The 2025 live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon performed very well in theaters, earning over $636 million worldwide and becoming one of the year’s biggest hits. While it received a good 77% score on Rotten Tomatoes, many felt it didn’t quite live up to the original film, which was almost universally praised with a 99% rating.
How to Train Your Dragon 2 will be coming into theaters on June 11, 2027.
