‘Gears of War’ Director David Leitch Hypes “Great Draft” of Screenplay

Netflix has been working on a movie based on the popular video game series Gears of War since 2022. They brought on David Leitch, the director of The Fall Guy, last year, which was encouraging – he also helped direct the first John Wick film and has a strong background in action movies. However, there haven’t been any significant updates about the project since then.

However, things are beginning to look up. In a recent interview with Collider at CinemaCon, Leitch shared some encouraging news:

It looks like a Gears of War movie is finally going to happen. The script is coming along very well, and everyone involved – including the studio, Netflix, and the game developer, The Coalition – is highly motivated to make it a reality. With The Coalition releasing a new game this year, the timing seems perfect.

Back in August 2025, we learned that Jon Spaihts, the co-writer of the first two Dune films and currently working on the third, was writing the script for a Gears of War movie. Coincidentally, a new Gears of War game, a prequel called Gears of War: E-Day, is scheduled to release this year on June 9th. Things are looking promising, and now we’re hoping to hear some news about who will be starring in the movie – that will really get things moving.

It’s still unclear what the Gears of War movie will be about. The first three Gears of War games centered on Marcus Fenix, a soldier leading a team to protect humanity from the Locust Horde – a terrifying race of underground creatures. Later games, the fourth and fifth, took place 25 years later and followed Marcus’ son, JD Fenix. An upcoming game, E-Day, will show the very beginning of the Locust Horde’s attack on humanity. Since the original Gears of War launched in 2006, many additional Gears of War games have also been released.

The movie will probably follow the story of the first Gears of War game, focusing on the character Marcus. While no one has been cast yet, Dave Bautista, known for Guardians of the Galaxy and his wrestling career, has been actively trying to get the role and has asked fans to support his campaign with Netflix.

The Gears of War series is famous for its intense third-person shooting, reliance on taking cover, gritty visuals, over-the-top weapons, and incredibly muscular characters. It’s a powerful action franchise that seems perfect for a movie, and thankfully, it’s finally happening. It’s taken a long time, but it could have been worse – the Metal Gear Solid movie was announced way back in 2006 and is only now starting to come together. With The Super Mario Bros. Movie being a huge box office success and shows like The Last of Us gaining popularity, adapting video games for the screen looks more promising than ever.
