Canceled Prince Of Persia Games Might Get A Second Chance After All, Says Leak

It’s no secret that many video games get canceled – from big-name franchises to promising indie titles. The gaming industry is highly competitive, and studios are constantly raising the bar to attract players. This pressure has even led to the cancellation of planned expansions for popular series. However, a recent report suggests that the long-canceled Prince of Persia might not be gone for good, offering a glimmer of hope for fans.

You might remember that Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown was first announced a few years ago. Ubisoft put together a team to create the game, which released in January 2024. However, even though they had planned expansions and a sequel, the game didn’t perform as well as Ubisoft hoped, so they cancelled those plans. Fans were surprised by this quiet decision, but the project was ultimately dropped. Now, there’s a new rumor suggesting Ubisoft might give Prince of Persia another chance, as the original development team is reuniting.

A Prince of Persia Team Has Allegedly Reformed

French influencer Gautoz, who previously shared news about the cancellation of future Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown content, has posted an update on BlueSky. They report that the main team behind the Prince of Persia game has been authorized by Ubisoft to propose ideas for new content.

According to some sources, the core team behind Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown has been authorized by Ubisoft to come back together and propose new game concepts. That’s all the information I have, and I’d like to leave it at that – let them work their magic, as they say,” Gatouz said.

The report didn’t detail which projects the team is working on, but attention is now focused on Prince of Persia. Gamers were clearly disappointed when Ubisoft cancelled the follow-up to The Lost Crown, and that frustration spread quickly online. Demand for a new Prince of Persia game is increasing, and with the talented team at Ubisoft Montreal back together, fans are hoping they can revive the cancelled sequel.

Hopefully The Sands of Time Bounces Back

Early reactions to the Prince of Persia series were very positive, but then Ubisoft significantly changed the development team. Reporter Gatouz detailed the initial excitement, explaining in a YouTube video that Ubisoft developers only had good things to say about the Prince of Persia franchise.

While researching the game’s development, Gatouz repeatedly heard people call it the best production experience of their lives – sometimes three or four times in a single weekend. He was also told it was a source of inspiration and a supportive environment for those feeling exhausted and discouraged.

The core development team repeatedly tried to get approval for a sequel, but were denied. They then proposed two expansions, hoping for a positive response, but that also didn’t work out. Ubisoft prioritized other projects expected to sell better, as Lost Crown hadn’t met sales goals. Surprisingly, the team was also told a sequel would actually hurt long-term sales of the original game.

The future of the Prince of Persia series is uncertain. The most recent major game didn’t perform well for Ubisoft, and The Rogue Prince of Persia received a fairly mild response. However, given the series’ past popularity, Ubisoft likely wants to bring it back to its former glory. With the team behind The Lost Crown working together again, there’s a possibility they could revitalize the franchise as an action RPG.
