I’m Shocked By Elden Ring: Nightreign’s Review Scores
Summary
- Elden Ring Nightreign’s 80 rating falls below FromSoftware’s usual standards for game scores.
- This makes it the lowest-rated Souls game from the studio.
- Despite lower scores, Nightreign is still a great value with a budget price and intense action gameplay.
Despite receiving generally positive reviews, Elden Ring Nightreign’s score is significantly lower compared to other major titles by FromSoftware, a highly esteemed developer known for their exceptional work in the gaming industry. Notably, two of their games have been awarded Game of the Year, and they consistently produce critically-acclaimed games. Given this track record, I had anticipated Elden Ring Nightreign would also secure a “Mighty” rating on OpenCritic, a review aggregator site.
Reviews for Elden Ring: Reign of the Night are circulating, and it appears that the game effectively delivers more of FromSoftware’s renowned intense action, with many finding it exhilarating to play in a 3-player cooperative mode. However, some criticism has been directed towards the game’s tendency to reuse content from previous FromSoftware titles, and it is suggested that single-player gameplay isn’t as enjoyable as multiplayer. Consequently, Elden Ring: Reign of the Night’s review scores have resulted in a rating that falls short of FromSoftware’s typical standards.
The review scores for Elden Ring Nightreign have resulted in an overall rating of 80, with 79% of critics advocating for the game. This is a commendable score, but it’s slightly lower than anticipated for a FromSoftware title, particularly their Souls series. Since Dark Souls 2 was released in 2014, almost every game from this studio has been categorized as “Mighty” on OpenCritic, signifying an average score of 84 or higher. The only exception is the VR game Deracine, which garnered a 70 rating.
How Elden Ring Nightreign’s Review Score Compares to Other FromSoftware Souls Games
- Demon’s Souls – 89
- Dark Souls – 89
- Dark Souls 2 – 88
- Bloodborne – 91
- Dark Souls 3 – 90
- Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice – 90
- Elden Ring – 95
- Elden Ring Nightreign – 80
It’s quite probable that Elden Ring: Nightreign won’t make it to the nominations for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2025 due to its lower-than-anticipated average review score. Even Elden Ring’s expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, received a contentious nomination for Game of the Year upon release, but it appears that Nightreign may not repeat this feat.
Presently, the top contenders for Game of the Year include games such as Monster Hunter Wilds, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and Split Fiction. There’s a chance that some well-received indie games could also win, with Blue Prince and Monster Train 2 being potential choices. Despite Elden Ring Nightreign being a multiplayer spin-off of the original game, many fans were skeptical about its ability to rival the original’s review scores. However, I was still taken aback by how far it fell short, earning it a place among FromSoftware’s lowest-rated games in the past decade.
For the upcoming game from FromSoftware, titled “The Duskbloods,” set to release exclusively on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026, multiplayer aspects are a prominent feature. It will be intriguing to observe how it fares against Nightreign and other titles developed by FromSoftware when it comes to reviews and player feedback.
As a dedicated gamer, I must admit that while 80 might not have been the lofty score I had hoped for Elden Ring Nightreign from FromSoftware, it’s still an impressive achievement. The budget-friendly price tag on this game only serves to make it even more appealing to fans like me who have grown fond of their previous titles.
