As a longtime fan of animated comedies, I definitely felt the loss when Big Mouth wrapped up last year. Thankfully, it looks like we’re getting a worthy successor! The creators are back with a new show called Mating Season, and from what I’ve heard, it’s aiming for the same hilariously inappropriate sweet spot. Consider me excited!
Netflix has released a trailer for its new series, Mating Season, which will begin streaming on May 22nd. The first season will have ten episodes, and the trailer’s release date was intentionally scheduled to coincide with National Horny Day – yes, that’s a real holiday! The trailer makes it clear that the series is quite explicit.
Netflix Unveils Its Horniest Series Yet
The new animated series, Mating Season, created by the team behind Big Mouth, is a hilarious and honest romantic comedy. It’s set in the animal kingdom and explores love, sex, and relationships through the eyes of bears, raccoons, deer, foxes, and other amusing forest creatures – all trying to find a mate and continue their species.
Mark Levin, Jennifer Flackett, Andrew Goldberg, and Nick Kroll created the show Mating Season. They also all serve as executive producers, along with Chris Prynoski, Shannon Prynoski, Antonio Canobbio, and Ben Kalina, through their respective production companies Brutus Pink and Titmouse.
Netflix’s John Derderian praised Big Mouth as a groundbreaking adult animated series, noting its ability to capture the universal and relatable experience of teenage awkwardness with humor and heart. He described the eight-season collaboration with Nick Kroll and the team at Brutus Pink as ‘legendary’ and expressed excitement for their new project, Mating Season, which promises the same bold and funny approach, but this time focused on the animal world.
The team behind Brutus Pink explained that after creating stories about childhood experiences in Big Mouth, they’re now thrilled to focus on the lives of adults – adults who just happen to be cartoon animals.
Nick Kroll Also Provides Voiceover Work for Mating Season
The animated series Mating Season features a talented voice cast including Nick Kroll (known from Big Mouth) as Ray the raccoon, June Diane Raphael (Grace and Frankie) as Fawn the deer, Zach Woods (Silicon Valley) as Josh the bear, and Sabrina Jalees (Black Mirror) as Penelope the Fox.
As a longtime animation fan, I really followed Big Mouth over its eight seasons, from 2017 to 2025. It was so interesting because it was based on Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg’s own awkward middle school experiences, and Kroll even voiced a version of his younger self! It didn’t shy away from anything – puberty, bodies, sex… honestly, it’s probably one of the most hilariously outrageous animated comedies I’ve ever seen. It reminds me a bit of Mating Season, but the big twist is that Big Mouth focuses on what it’s like to go through puberty as a kid, while Mating Season looks at animal mating habits.
Mating Season will premiere on Netflix on May 22, 2026.
