Production is well underway on Heartstopper Forever, the final installment in the popular series, with a release expected later this year. However, one of the actors has been replaced.
Olivia Colman, known for her role as Sarah Nelson in the Netflix series, won’t be appearing in the upcoming film. Anna Maxwell Martin will be taking over the role and is expected to do a fantastic job.
Since Colman wasn’t in the show’s third season, her absence from the final movie isn’t entirely unexpected. However, the decision to replace the actress who played her is a significant one that was carefully considered.

Alice Oseman, the creator and writer of the Heartstopper series, shared that she knew from the start of the Heartstopper Forever screenplay that Nick’s mother, Sarah, needed to be included in the story (according to Tudum).
It’s clear how important Nick’s mum is to him – she’s a key source of support when he’s going through tough times. Because of this, her absence in this final part of his story felt strange, especially considering the emotional challenges he’s dealing with.
What to Read Next
Unfortunately, Olivia Colman couldn’t participate in the film, so we had to recast the role instead of removing the character altogether. We are incredibly thankful for her wonderful work on the project.
Oseman expressed immense excitement about Anna Maxwell Martin joining the cast, explaining that she captures Sarah’s kind and genuine personality beautifully. They described scenes with Martin and Kit Connor as truly special.
Martin, known for his role in the BBC series Ludwig, isn’t the only new face joining the cast. Experienced actor Derek Jacobi will also make a surprise appearance. Alongside him, returning favorites like Connor, who plays Nick Nelson, as well as Joe Locke, Yasmin Finney, and Will Gao, will be back for more.

Wash Westmoreland will direct Heartstopper Forever, continuing the series after Euros Lyn. The film will adapt the sixth and final book in Alice Oseman’s graphic novel series.
We don’t have a confirmed release date for the Netflix film yet, but the creator, Alice Oseman, has said it will be released after their new book comes out. The book is scheduled for July 2nd, meaning the film won’t be available for at least a couple of months after that.
You can watch seasons 1 through 3 of Heartstopper on Netflix now. The final season, Heartstopper Forever, will be available later in 2024.
