Unlocking Secrets: Marvel’s Comic Reveals 30-Year-Old Mission: Impossible Mystery!

[Caution: This discussion reveals plot details from Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.] The preliminary briefing for an IMF agent outlines that if they or their team are apprehended or perish during a mission, the Secretary will deny any knowledge of their activities. In the 1996 film Mission: Impossible, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) faces disavowal when his team – leader Jim Phelps (Jon Voight), wife Claire (Emmanuelle Béart), hacker Jack Harmon (Emilio Estevez), surveillance operative Hannah Williams (Ingeborga Dapkūnaitė), and undercover agent Sarah Davies (Kristin Scott Thomas) – are all killed during a mission to recover the partner of a stolen CIA NOC list, a compilation of covert agents operating in Eastern Europe.

If it’s discovered that the operation is actually part of a two-year mission to track down a renegade agent, and IMF Director Kittridge (Henry Czerny) suspects Ethan of conspiring with arms dealer Max Mitsopolis (Vanessa Redgrave) to obtain the NOC list, he’s compelled to flee in order to uncover the true mole. It is later found that the disc the mole sold Max was a fake, and so Ethan strikes a bargain with Max: he provides her with both parts of the NOC list, she reveals the mole.

To gain unauthorized access into the IMF’s central computer system located at the CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia and retrieve the NOC list, Ethan enlists two former IMF operatives: Franz Krieger (Jean Reno), a skilled helicopter pilot who is also proficient with knives, and Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames), more commonly known as Phineas Freak. He’s famous for allegedly hacking the NATO Ghost Com system, although he defends himself by saying, “There was no concrete proof that I was involved in that extraordinary operation.

Towards the movie’s conclusion, it becomes clear that Krieger had been collaborating with the mole, Phelps. Feeling disillusioned, underappreciated, and deemed outdated, he had devised a plan to steal the NOC list and sell it to Max for $6 million. However, Ethan unmasked him, with Luther’s assistance, before he could go through with his scheme.

After being removed from the blacklist, Luther says to Ethan, “I’m really going to miss having a dubious reputation.” To which, Ethan replies, “Just so you know, I’ll forever associate you with that image.” (Note: The following contains spoilers for Final Reckoning!)

30 years after the events, Luther sacrifices himself to defuse a dangerous plutonium device set by Gabriel, Ethan Hunt’s adversary, in the movie “Mission: Impossible – Fallout”. The eighth and concluding “Mission: Impossible” film features numerous references, appearances, and flashbacks to the earlier seven films – such as the reappearance of William Donloe, the CIA analyst from Alaska in the original film, and the disclosure that Jasper Briggs is actually Jim Phelps’ son. However, we are still left unaware as to why Luther was dismissed by the Impossible Mission Force before the beginning of the first “Mission”.

In contrast to Mission: Impossible’s portrayal where Luther’s hacking of NATO is depicted as leading to his disavowal by the IMF, the prequel comic series from Marvel provides an account of Luther’s individual mission preceding the original film’s events. This 48-page narrative was published by Marvel Comics and hit the shelves on May 22, 1996, in line with the release of the movie.

A six-page side story, called “Should Any of Your Agents…”, written by Marv Wolfman (co-creator of Marvel’s Blade) and illustrated by Rob Liefeld (co-creator of Marvel’s Deadpool), starts right in the middle of things. IMF Agent Luther Stickell is found in Santa Delvado, South America, where he’s snatched a computer disk from President Filipo’s palace on Kittridge’s instructions. With no one to rely on, Kittridge tells Luther, “You’re flying solo.

Luther sends data from a disk to the IMF’s email, exposing information about the president of Santa Delvado being bribed to illegally send high-tech weapons to American terrorists. Kittridge claims that the Araqistani “White Eagle” is involved in this deal, but Filipo’s team has disrupted Luther’s communication. The U.S. plans to impose economic sanctions on Filipo for his role in this transaction, but they need evidence of his collaboration with the Araqistani mafia – they urgently need the computer disk.

Over the communication system, Kittridge contacts Luther to inform him about an issue with NATO’s Ghost Com. “Have you been trying to access it?” Kittridge inquires.

“You should know Ghost Com is impenetrable,” Luther says. “I wouldn’t even consider it.

While Luther hurries towards the docks to meet his underwater vehicle, Kittridge informs him that another agent has been contacted in Araqistan to pursue Luther’s lead. However, before Luther can get away, he is captured by President Filipo and his troops.

In this rephrased version: Filipo locks up Luther in order to manipulate him against the American administration. The narrative now centers on Franz Krieger, a disgraced IMF agent in Asimar, Araqistan, who was earlier arrested by Kittridge for an undefined smuggling operation, but later recruited as a mercenary. Krieger pursues the “White Eagle” and is unable to retrieve the crucial evidence that Kittridge needs, but instead destroys a consignment of weapons bound for the U.S.A. Krieger then instructs Kittridge to transfer funds to a Swiss bank account.

In a conversation with the IMF Secretary, Kittridge informs that Krieger is still not recognized or approved. Concerning Stickell, recent CIA findings suggest he may have interfered with nuclear weapon launch codes. Kittridge shares this information with the Secretary, stating, “They want him removed from our radar.” A disavowed status should help us achieve that goal.

And so that’s how Luther Stickell, A.K.A. Phineas Freak, became disreputable.
