Fans have been eagerly awaiting the introduction of the Absolute Robins, and they’ve finally arrived! In this version of the story, they’re actually enemies of Batman, which isn’t too surprising for this popular series. However, the character they’ve teamed up with is a complete shocker.
Absolute Batman #19 establishes .
In the latest installment of Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta’s popular series, Gotham City’s mayor, Hamilton Hill, unveils the Robin Program. This new initiative, funded by Jack Grimm IV – also known as the Absolute Joker – aims to stop Absolute Batman. The program will provide orphaned children in Gotham with advanced technology to help them track down the vigilante.
It’s not surprising to see villains like Deathstroke and The Joker targeting Batman across any version of the DC Universe. But it’s a bigger shock to see them convince members of Batman’s own team to help them.
Deathstroke, the ruthless mercenary known for his eyepatch and sword skills, has a decades-long, bitter rivalry with the original Robin, Dick Grayson, starting in the early 1980s. That same decade also saw Jason Todd begin his quest for revenge against The Joker, who infamously killed him after fans voted to decide the fate of the second Robin.
Okay, so things officially changed for Batman with the release of Absolute Batman: Ark M Special #1 in January 2026. That’s when we found out Batman’s teamed up with the Absolute Joker! But get this – the comic also showed that Batman used to be close with Absolute Alfred Pennyworth, who’s a total surprise – he’s an MI6 assassin now, and he’s actually working with Bruce Wayne! It’s wild because in this version of the story, Bruce is just a regular construction worker during the day.
The latest issue of Absolute Batman reveals that Slade Wilson (Deathstroke) relies on robotic limbs and a prosthetic face, which he has to attach each morning. Surprisingly, this isn’t the strangest thing fans have seen in this version of the DC Universe. Previous issues have already shown that the Absolute Joker is a flesh-eating demon and Absolute Poison Ivy is a monstrous being similar to the shape-shifting alien in John Carpenter’s The Thing.
Deathstroke first appeared in DC Comics’ The New Teen Titans #2 in December 1980, created by Marv Wolfman and George Pérez. He has since headlined his own comic book series, titled Deathstroke the Terminator.
Absolute Batman #19 Has More Shocking Twists To Behold
While Deathstroke leading the Absolute Robins is surprising in Absolute Batman #19, the story’s biggest reveal is actually the event that started the Robin Program.
This issue opens with a shocking scene: ex-mayor of Gotham City is driven off a building by a terrifying vision of crows. Batman tries to intervene, but fails to save him. Witnesses believe Batman is to blame, and the city turns against the masked vigilante as a result.
Gordon actually died because of the Absolute Scarecrow, and it’s now confirmed he was working with The Joker, as shown in Absolute Batman #19. This version of Dr. Jonathan Crane used a powerful fear toxin on Gordon, which caused his paranoia and the hallucinations of crows that he experienced before he died.
Earlier issues of Absolute Batman focused on Commissioner Gordon realizing Bruce Wayne was secretly a vigilante – he figured it out partly because of Bruce’s powerful build. It was also recently revealed that Gordon had begun a romantic relationship with Bruce’s mother, Martha, after her husband, Thomas, was killed at the city zoo.
Absolute Batman #19 is available now, and Absolute Batman #20 hits the shelves on May 13.
