Aaron Paul’s Crushing Rejection Led to His Breaking Bad Breakthrough

Prior to his breakout fame on “Breaking Bad”, Aaron Paul nearly secured a role in a sitcom that numerous other up-and-coming actors were vying for. Reflecting now, Paul recalls the feelings of despair he experienced during that time, unaware of the success that lay just beyond the horizon.

In a recent interview, Paul talked about his professional journey. He reminisced about trying out for a CBS sitcom named “The Class“, which was a sequel to the popular series “Friends” by co-creator David Crane. Regrettably, he wasn’t cast in that show. Little did he know that this setback would eventually pave the way for him to land his breakthrough role. Although brighter times were soon to come, Paul was deeply disheartened when he didn’t get selected for “The Class“.

Paul mentioned that The Class had already been renewed for two seasons, pointing out that it was considered a show with great promise. He added that it was being touted as “the next big Friends“, a title that had everyone, including his acting friends, eager to audition for it. Everyone seemed to be vying for it, as it held a lot of appeal.

He explained, “I tried out for a part at the studio, alongside three other men. Then, they pitted me against another candidate, and neither of us got it. After that, I auditioned again for another role, went to the studio, networked with another person, but didn’t get it either. I can’t express enough how deflated I felt, for an extended period.

Paul chimed in, saying, “The series was solid, let me tell you. It ran for approximately a year and a half, though some found it enjoyable. However, it wasn’t quite as iconic as ‘Friends.’ Its title was ‘The Class.’ You see, if I had taken that role, I wouldn’t have been eligible to try out for ‘Breaking Bad.’ So, the moral of my tale is, always keep pursuing opportunities because you never know what might be waiting just around the bend.

Collaborating with Jeffrey Klarik, Crane devised the television series titled “The Class“. Premiering in 2006 on CBS, this sitcom chronicled the lives of eight individuals who had been classmates in third grade, exactly twenty years prior. The ensemble cast included notable actors such as Jon Bernthal, Jason Ritter, Lizzy Caplan, and Jesse Tyler Ferguson.

In the hit TV show “Breaking Bad,” Paul’s character achieved remarkable success, winning him three Primetime Emmy Awards.
