Dexter Morgan is coming back for a second season, and this time the action will be centered around New York City, with him pursuing more serial killers. Fans are also wondering if he’ll finally get the chance to finish off a killer who escaped him in the first season, and it seems like that might happen.
In Season 1 of Dexter: Resurrection, Eric Stonestreet played Al, a serial killer nicknamed “Rapunzel” because he cut off his victims’ ponytails. Dexter, played by Michael C. Hall, tried to stop Al, but the killer managed to escape. While there hasn’t been an official confirmation, Stonestreet suggested in an interview with TV Insider that he expects to return and face justice at the hands of Dexter in Season 2.
Rapunzel’s Time for Justice Is Coming, Says Eric Stonestreet
According to actor Jack Stonestreet, Dexter Morgan always catches up to people. While filming, he wondered how many characters had actually escaped Dexter, and the producers confirmed very few had. Stonestreet wouldn’t say what this means for Al, another character in the show, but hinted that Al might not be so lucky.
Dexter and Al first crossed paths after Dexter exposed a secret society of serial killers led by Leon Prater in the first season. Dexter then eliminated several of the society’s members, eventually killing Prater himself. Later, Dexter tried to get Al to meet him at a private location – a New York shop – with the intention of killing him, but the plan failed when Al threw away his temporary phone and refused to meet. Some viewers have wondered if Al suspected Dexter’s true nature, but the show’s writer doesn’t believe that was the reason.
Does Al Know About Dexter’s Secret?
According to Stonestreet, it’s unlikely that happened, but the writers, Clyde Phillips and Scott Reynolds, have the ability to retroactively claim it was always the plan – which is a benefit of being a writer. He doesn’t believe it was intentional, and that speaks to how well Michael C. Hall and the creative team executed their roles.
He believes Al is a bit more naive and enthusiastic than someone who would easily understand that situation, but thinks he’ll eventually figure it out.
With Prater’s criminal network dismantled, Rapunzel has little incentive to come back to the city. However, his continued friendship with Dexter suggests a way to draw him in for a final confrontation. Meanwhile, Dexter will be facing multiple challenges in the new season with the additions of Brian Cox, playing the New York Ripper, and Dan Stevens as the Five Borough Killer. Additionally, Uma Thurman will reprise her role as Charley, Prater’s former accomplice.
Dexter: Resurrection is with the Showtime add-on.
