Even after several months, the finale of Netflix’s Stranger Things remains a major talking point for the streaming service. While Netflix has released some exciting new movies and shows recently – including Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen, which features Stranger Things creators the Duffer Brothers – none have generated quite the same buzz as previous hits. Fortunately, the return of one of Netflix’s most popular original series is now earning rave reviews and a high score on Rotten Tomatoes.
I have to say, when Lee Sung Jin’s Beef first came out in 2023 with Steven Yeun and Ali Wong leading the cast, it didn’t exactly explode onto the scene. They had fans, sure, but it wasn’t an instant hit. But word of mouth spread, and people started tuning in to see what happened after a simple road rage incident spiraled into something truly dark and unpredictable. Now, with Season 2 boasting a completely fresh story and cast, the show continues to impress – it’s currently sitting pretty at 87% on Rotten Tomatoes, which is fantastic!
While the initial response isn’t quite as overwhelmingly positive as the first season, with only a small number of reviews available right now, there’s still a good chance it will improve. This is especially likely considering many of the original creative team returned for this new season.
The latest season of the show features Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Caliee Spaeny, and Charles Melton. The story still revolves around a disagreement that sets off a chain of surprising events, but this time, instead of a public confrontation, it’s a private argument between a married couple. Or so they believe – they soon discover another couple secretly watched the entire thing.
The first season was a critical success, earning high scores on Rotten Tomatoes and winning major awards like the Emmy and Golden Globe for Best Limited Series. Both Steven Yeun and Janina Gavankar also received Emmy and Golden Globe recognition. Director Jake Schreier told MovieWeb that the team focused on telling the best possible story for Season 2, without feeling pressured to replicate the success of the first season.
It wasn’t a huge shift in how things worked. We didn’t have to worry about concealing outfits as people arrived on set. What’s really impressive about Sonny is his strong self-awareness and drive. He constantly challenges himself and expects the same from others, which meant there was never a sense of complacency. Of course, there’s always pressure when you’re creating something, to ensure it’s good.
Creating even a good product is challenging, and when you’re striving for something great, you’re hoping everything comes together. However, this season didn’t feel much different from the first. We had a fantastic team who were all passionate about making something meaningful and delivering the best possible result.
Now that Season 2 has just launched on Netflix, it’s still too early to say if viewers will like this new story as much as the first season.
