If you’re a music fan, you probably already know about Record Store Day on Saturday, April 18th. It’s especially exciting for vinyl lovers and anyone who enjoys collecting limited-edition releases. It’s a fantastic way to celebrate music and support your local record store!
My coworker at Audiophix, Jonathan Eig, recently shared his ideas about getting the most out of Record Store Day, which began in the US in 2007. It’s since become a global event, and the UK quickly joined in – becoming one of the biggest participating countries just a year later in 2008.
Okay, so what’s the deal with Record Store Day in the UK? Honestly, the best place to find out everything is Recordstoreday.co.uk. But it’s really all about supporting your local record shop! There are over 300 independent stores taking part, and a lot of them are doing special things like live music, talks, and events. I love my local store – it’s also a cafe, so I can grab a coffee and listen to some great tunes while I’m digging for vinyl!
4 great Record Store Day UK exclusives the US is missing out on
In addition to local releases, many special editions are coming out today. While a lot of information has already been published, availability varies by country. Here in the UK, we’re getting some records that won’t be released internationally, and might not be available in the US.
Initially, some releases will only be available in the UK. However, any leftover copies are expected to be sold online. You can find a complete list at the UK Record Store Day website linked above.
These four items won’t be available in US stores, but they will be released in the UK. I’m definitely hoping to get my hands on them for my collection.
Annie Lennox – Live In Central Park
This double LP features the incredible voice of Annie Lennox, showcasing a live recording of her concert in New York City’s Central Park on September 9, 1995. It’s a special vinyl release, pressed in a striking red color.
Badfinger – No Dice
Originally released in 1970, this album marks the debut of the band Baddinger. It features their popular song, “No Matter What,” as well as their take on the classic “Without You.” Band members Tom Evans and Pete Hams penned the song, which later became a hit for Harry Nilsson and Mariah Carey.
This release features a remastered version of the album from 2010, available on vinyl for the very first time. It’s a fantastic trip down memory lane!
James Dean Bradfield – The Great Western
This album marked James Dean Bradfield’s debut solo work, released in 2006 and created outside of his band, the Manic Street Preachers. Originally unavailable, it’s now being re-released in the UK exclusively for Record Store Day. The songs are gentler and more acoustic than his work with the Manics, and this re-release – 20 years after the original – is on colored vinyl.
Nicky Wire – Intimism
Okay, so I was stoked to hear Nicky Wire, the bassist from The Manics, is getting involved with Record Store Day! His album, Intimism, originally came out last year, but it didn’t have a physical release then. Now it’s finally getting pressed on coloured vinyl for RSD! Even cooler, both his album and James Dean Bradfield’s RSD release are donating a pound to War Child, which is awesome – they do great work helping kids affected by conflict.
