Oblivion Remastered has reminded me how lucky we are to have an independent Elder Scrolls wiki in the hallowed UESP
In Oblivion Remastered, it wasn’t until I had assumed the role of Fighter’s Guild leader, triumphed in the Imperial Arena, joined forces with the Thieves Guild, and aided several Daedric Princes with their tasks that I embarked on the main quest. During this encounter with an NPC, I noticed a larger volume of dialogue than I recall from my past experiences. Doubtful if my memory was faulty, I turned to the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages to investigate Ilav Dralgoner. To my surprise, I discovered that his expanded dialogue was indeed part of the Deluxe Edition’s exclusive quests. A quick alt-tab later, I found myself once again immersed in an information overload, much like I often find myself when playing any Elder Scrolls game.
Interested in discovering which Non-Player Characters (NPCs) in Oblivion travel between towns according to a set schedule? You might spend a significant portion of your game time searching for this information in a user-friendly table on the UESP’s list of Travelers in Oblivion. For instance, consider Alval Uvani, the gruff dark elf who moves between Leyawin, Bravil, Skingrad, and Bruma, and has no patience for your casual chit-chat. Similarly, Yngvar Doom-Sayer is programmed to traverse the entire Shivering Isles. The UESP provides extensive details about Kiara at the Brina Cross Inn as well, even though she remains stationary; she can be found standing halfway up the staircase, keeping watch over a piece of ham cooking on a nearby grill.
This level of precision and thoroughness is what sets exceptional wiki pages apart, such as the meticulously crafted list of references to previous Baldur’s Gate games found on BG3 Wiki, or the comprehensive page dedicated to breasts on Wookieepedia. The UESP is brimming with similar examples, like the exhaustive catalog of Oblivion’s 16 different rat subtypes, including the non-aggressive rat dwelling in the Imperial Prison Sewer that you might not have known only attacks if provoked first. Another example is the collection of running gags, which I am indebted to for enlightening me about M’aiq the Liar – a character who traverses the game world spreading humorous dialogue about cut content and changes between games – being a literal running gag.
Since way back in 1995, I’ve been a regular at this amazing resource known as the UESP. It originally started off as The Unofficial Daggerfall FAQ on Usenet. Over the years, it has grown into a massive library with over 100,000 pages! In fact, when I uploaded my 100,000th piece of content, they made a special page dedicated to all things cheese – talk about dedication!
This gaming hub isn’t just a place to read up on lore or find NPC stats; it’s a treasure trove that can help you master Oblivion’s spellcrafting system and create some truly powerful spells. Plus, every location is marked on an interactive, zoomable satellite map.
But that’s not all – the UESP also serves as an archive for official wallpapers, concept art, and other neat goodies. When my therapist tells me to visualize a happy place, I always think of their Shivering Isles concept art – it’s that inspiring!
Essentially, it’s an ideal wiki for everything you could wish for regarding the Elder Scrolls, making my years with the game more delightful than they might have been otherwise. Despite other companies capitalizing on monetizing fan wikis and thus reducing their quality, the UESP stands out as a well-researched labyrinth, where you can easily lose track of time—all thanks to the convenience of being able to read every book in the Elder Scrolls series in one place, rather than having to look them up individually. Similar examples include the Team Fortress Wiki or Bulbapedia.
