Prime Video’s Stargate Revival Is Coming At The Perfect Time

Space operas have historically struggled to succeed on television. Creating the visuals for a sprawling galactic setting is incredibly costly. Because of this, any new, expensive space adventure needs to become popular immediately to prove it’s worth the investment. While shows like The Expanse and Battlestar Galactica have found success, most space-based TV shows rely on established franchises to gain studio support.

Disney has released a lot of Star Wars shows recently, with some being very popular (Andor, The Mandalorian), a few being surprisingly good (Skeleton Crew stands out), and many others quickly forgotten (Ahsoka, The Acolyte, The Book of Boba Fett). Paramount has been doing something similar with Star Trek over the last few years, adding lots of new shows to Paramount+. However, they’ve now decided to slow down that approach. With the cancellation of Starfleet Academy, there are no Star Trek shows currently in production.

Don’t worry, even though Paramount is reducing its Star Trek content, the future of space adventures is still bright. Amazon’s MGM Studios is reviving Stargate, which should fill the void for fans. They first announced the Stargate reboot in November 2025, and it has the potential to be the exciting new space opera series we’ve been waiting for.

The new Stargate series is off to a great start with the hiring of Martin Gero as showrunner. Gero is a longtime fan and writer for the franchise, having worked on all three previous live-action shows, so he truly understands the world and its history. Often, streaming revivals struggle because the showrunner isn’t familiar with the original material, but that won’t be a problem here.

What Prime Video’s Stargate Revival Can Learn From Star Trek’s Modern Era

Amazon’s new Stargate series is starting strong with a fantastic team behind it. Not only is Gero leading the show, but Brad Wright, who co-created the original series, and Joe Mallozzi, another Stargate veteran, are also contributing producers. Plus, Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin – the creators of the 1994 Stargate movie that started it all – are executive producers. It’s similar to having Gene Roddenberry involved with Paramount’s current Star Trek shows.

The new Stargate series has a strong starting point thanks to the return of the original creative team, giving it an advantage over recent Star Trek shows. However, it can also learn from Star Trek’s experiences. Star Trek has recently found it difficult to appeal to both longtime fans and new audiences. While details about the new Stargate show are still under wraps, it’s confirmed to continue the existing story while also being welcoming to those unfamiliar with the franchise.

The main issue with current Star Trek shows is a lack of overall direction. There are many different projects happening, but they don’t feel connected or consistent in terms of characters and stories. It feels like the creators are randomly trying out ideas, and, as evidenced by recent cancellations at Paramount, those ideas aren’t resonating with audiences. They’re trying to replicate Marvel’s success without the same careful planning and long-term vision.

Like all great science fiction, such as Star Trek, Stargate needs to combine big, imaginative ideas with compelling, human stories. While sci-fi is known for its grand scope and visual effects, truly great drama centers on relatable characters, stories, and conflicts.
