Goku’s Wildest Fights Before He Was a Super Saiyan

In the initial tale of this series, the Pilaf saga is introduced. Herein lies Goku’s encounters with future lifelong companions such as Yamcha, Master Roshi, and Chi-Chi. They also come across their earliest adversaries who aim to dominate the world: Emperor Pilaf, Shu, and Mai. While later sagas boast of epic martial arts battles and dramatic energy showdowns, this one primarily concentrates on character development and humorous skirmishes. The characters’ paths cross through the common objective of gathering the seven Dragon Balls.

Despite Goku being the strongest active character in the saga, he isn’t exempt from engaging in challenging battles. With strong influences from the Chinese folk novel “Journey to the West,” each fight carries a mystical undertone and a touch of humor. However, it’s important to note that Goku doesn’t emerge victorious in every battle.

Dragon Ball Episode 1: “The Secret of the Dragon Balls”

In the thrilling world of Dragon Ball, I once found myself in a scene where I, as an observer, witnessed Goku’s inaugural battle. This wasn’t your typical martial arts showdown; it was against a colossal fish that he reeled in with his strong fishing line. Fast forward to Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot, they’ve cleverly incorporated this unique encounter into their own immersive fishing minigame.

With his tail acting as a lure, Goku’s foe, disguised as a fish, jumped to strike at Goku. However, Goku swiftly countered with a powerful jumping kick, defeating it. For the remainder of the episode, the defeated fish served as Goku’s catch, and more importantly, became one of the enduring iconic images in the franchise.

Dragon Ball Episode 01: “The Secret of the Dragon Balls”

In their initial encounter, Goku and Bulma’s interaction was hostile. Goku, fearing that the automobile Bulma was operating was a menacing creature attempting to swipe his food, reacted by turning the vehicle upside down. This action left Bulma with no choice but to exit the car while brandishing a weapon.

Instead of interrogating, Bulma instead fires at Goku, surprising since he was evidently a young boy. Yet, Goku miraculously springs back up unfazed after the gunshots, indicating minimal harm. This incident marked the beginning of one of anime’s most legendary friendships between Goku and Bulma.

Dragon Ball Episode 01: “The Secret of the Dragon Balls”

To highlight Goku’s innocence, Dragon Ball orchestrates a deception involving a Pterodactyl abducting Bulma in the storyline. The Pterodactyl creature leads Goku to believe that both him and Bulma are allies, which allows him to flee with her. Goku manages to free himself from his restraints as soon as Bulma cries out for help.

Goku soars up on his motorbike, jumps off, and whacks a Pterodactyl’s neck with his Power Staff, uttering a triumphant “Bwak.” He rescues Bulma, and together they launch their adventure with a hearty chuckle.

Dragon Ball Episode 02: “The Emperor’s Quest”

In a standalone episode without manga basis, Goku rescues Shu and Mai from a group of wolves during his mealtime hunt. He swiftly engages in a short skirmish with the wolves before returning to Bulma with the catch: a wolf carcass and a centipede.

Initially mistaking their plane for a monster, Goku gives it a good kick – his first ever encounter with Shu and Mai happens this way. In the original comic (manga), however, the Pilaf Gang didn’t look like this duo; they made their debut at the end of the saga, not crossing paths with Goku until later on in the narrative.

Dragon Ball Episode 03: “The Nimbus Cloud of Roshi”

As I stroll toward the beach accompanied by Turtle, a newcomer from the last episode, both Goku and Bulma cross paths with a mischievous Bear Thief who makes a menacing threat towards our little companion. This encounter marks a significant shift in our narrative as it appears to be Goku’s initial confrontation – a genuine battle, setting this instance apart from his previous encounters that were with non-combatants. Or perhaps more accurately, this fight is portrayed as the series’ introduction of his first genuine combat experience.

The brief skirmish ends swiftly as Goku dispatches the Bear Thief with a single strike to the head, demonstrating that he possesses extraordinary strength, speed, and martial arts prowess surpassing many of his powerful adversaries.

Dragon Ball Episode 04: “Oolong the Terrible”

In their quest for the Dragon Balls, Goku and Bulma arrive at the village of Aru. During their investigation, they step into the residence of Sherman Priest. Upon entering, an unexpected event unfolds as Sherman wields a heavy axe and strikes it against Goku’s head, causing a small bump. However, Sherman expresses his displeasure over Goku taking his daughter, but the situation is soon sorted out.

In the grip of fear, the village is being tormented by a chameleon-like beast called Oolong, who has been kidnapping young women from the village. Determined to put an end to this terror and rescue the girls, Goku and Bulma make a pact to vanquish Oolong, and in return, they will be granted access to the Six-Star Dragon Ball hidden within the village.

Dragon Ball Episode 04: “Oolong the Terrible”

Following an intricate scheme where Goku disguised himself as Pocahontas, Goku and Oolong clash in combat. Just before the fight, Oolong transforms into a colossal Spanish-speaking bull, eager to battle, but at the last moment, he flees. Goku pursues him and discovers a small pig, reminiscent of a character from “Journey to the West.” Unaware that it’s Oolong, Goku brings the pig back to the village with him. Later, transformed into a giant metal ninja armed with enormous chopsticks, Oolong attempts another assault on Goku. However, Goku demonstrates his martial arts skills learned from his grandfather by shattering three bricks that Oolong provides for testing. Terrified, Oolong transforms into a bat and makes an attempt to escape, only for Goku to capture him with Nimbus.

In my excitement, I found myself transformed as the jovial Oolong for just five short minutes. Mistakingly thinking I had more time, I leaped into a rocket to soar through the skies, little did I know my time was running out. Crashing down and nearly meeting my end, I was miraculously saved by the powerful Goku on Nimbus! He graciously escorted me back to our humble village where I was tasked with liberating some captive girls.

However, upon their release, it turned out they had been playing a trick on poor Oolong! They’d been using his transformation for their own amusement, leaving me defeated and dejected. But in the end, Bulma and Goku triumphed, securing the elusive Six-Star Dragon Ball!

Dragon Ball Episode 05: “Yamcha the Desert Bandit”

In an unexpected turn of events, it was Yamcha who dealt Goku his initial defeat. This is a point that fans often remind each other of in conversations about Dragon Ball, as Yamcha marked the beginning of Goku’s competitive journey. During their encounter, Yamcha tried to rob Goku and Oolong, who were now part of the group they were traveling with. In their confrontation, Yamcha wielded a sword while Goku used his Power Pole. As Yamcha fought, he began to sense a familiar strength in Goku, realizing that Goku was the grandson of Gohan, from whom Goku had inherited the Power Pole. Despite exchanging powerful blows, Goku was sent flying by one of Yamcha’s Wolf Fang Fist attacks.

In a moment of assumption, Oolong believes Goku has been defeated and prepares to surrender the capsules to Yamcha. However, just as he’s about to do so, Goku springs back to his feet. But this brief respite is short-lived, as another powerful Wolf Fang Fist strike brings Goku down again, sealing his defeat for now. Before Goku can rally once more, Bulma appears on the scene, and Yamcha’s fear overcomes him so strongly that he flees in a state of panic.

Dragon Ball Episode 07: “The Ox King on Fire Mountain”

In the world of Dragon Ball, Goku squares off against Ox-King, Chi-Chi’s father, in a brief skirmish at Fire Mountain. Suspecting that Goku and his companions are after his hoard, Ox-King tries to eliminate Goku, but the resourceful young monkey boy hops aboard his Flying Nimbus and uses it to dart around Ox-King, leaving him disoriented.

In the battle, Goku successfully kicks Ox-King, but Ox-King calls a halt to their fight. This is because Ox-King figures out that Goku must have encountered Master Roshi, which granted him the Flying Nimbus. As it turns out, Ox-King learns that Goku is the grandson of Grandpa Gohan, a man whom Ox-King considers like a brother. The fight concludes as a draw, and they part ways as friends.

Dragon Ball Episode 09: “Boss Rabbit’s Magic Touch”

In a nameless settlement, Goku and his companions pull over their flying vehicle for a refueling break. In light of the last episode’s occurrences, Bulma decides to go shopping while dressed in a stylish Bunny Suit – a signature look that suits her character perfectly. This particular outfit grants Bulma free access to all the items she purchases, thanks to the Rabbit Cult, who are responsible for this peculiar perk. The Rabbit Cult, a group of ardent rabbit devotees, cause chaos in the village. Two armed members of the cult, infatuated with Bulma, make their appearance and attempt to woo her, but they’re swiftly defeated by Goku.

In a town, the men summon their intimidating supervisor, infamously known as Giant Carrot, due to his ability to transform anyone into a carrot with a swift touch. Yamcha, who’s been observing this group the whole time, jumps in to help them, leading to a chaotic fight where Bulma’s life hangs in the balance. In the final moments of the battle, Goku employs his Power Staff to compel Giant Carrot into reversing Bulma’s transformation. As a punishment for their actions, Goku utilizes his Power Staff again to transport all three gang members to the moon, leaving them to make treats for children for an entire year. To this day, it remains uncertain what happened to the Rabbit Trio, as the Dragon Ball moon has exploded at least twice.
