DC’s Radical Joker Redesign Was Inspired By A Horrifying Movie Role

All-star writer Matt Fraction confirms the horrifying inspiration for the Joker’s new look.

Recently on the BIFF! BAM! POW! podcast, Fraction talked about how The Joker’s frightening personality and current situation were heavily influenced by the film Manhunter. Manhunter, in turn, is based on Thomas Harris’s 1981 novel Red Dragon, and specifically by Brian Cox’s performance as Hannibal Lecktor (a different spelling of the more common ‘Lecter’) in that film.

Fraction highlighted a powerful scene between Hannibal Lecter and FBI agent Will Graham. Graham points out Lecter’s numerous flaws, and Lecter, with chilling curiosity, asks him to specify those flaws. Graham simply responds, “You’re completely insane.”

I wanted to create a Joker story that felt fresh, which is challenging considering how many Joker and Batman tales have already been told. He’s arguably the greatest comic book villain, but that also means his character has been explored extensively. I asked myself, what hasn’t been done? What would feel truly different? I landed on the idea of a Joker who is slow, overweight, and subdued – someone who, if he were stable, might actually be friends with Batman.

The Joker’s Recent Transformation — Explained

Things recently shifted dramatically, with the biggest change being the arrival of Doctor Annika Zeller. Her work at Arkham Towers has fundamentally altered the Joker, making him unlike anything fans have seen before.

Dr. Zeller’s research centers on the Crown of Storms, a device she invented to track and control brain function. Working from her lab in Arkham Towers, she has conducted experiments on numerous test subjects.

The Joker is currently held in a special stasis tube, but he can still communicate using the technology connected to him. What’s truly unusual is that he’s experiencing a rare moment of complete mental clarity, offering a completely new perspective on this well-known character.

The Joker is surprisingly complex, showing a depth rarely seen in the character. He can even have normal conversations, like with Batman. Meanwhile, Bruce Wayne faces a new, hidden danger targeting his wealth, though the source of this threat remains a mystery.
