For All Mankind: ‘Hi Bob!’ Catchphrase Ends With Ed Baldwin’s Death

Warning: SPOILERS for For All Mankind Season 5, Episode 3 – “Home”

Now halfway through its fifth season, For All Mankind has reached a point where its famous tagline no longer applies. The season focuses heavily on the increasing social and political unrest in the Mars colony of Happy Valley, which is rocked by its first murder investigation. At the same time, strange events on Titan are prompting new missions to Saturn’s moon.

Season 2 of For All Mankind unexpectedly created the show’s signature line, “Hi Bob!” While stuck at the Jamestown base on the moon for months, Ed Baldwin (Joel Kinnaman), Gordo Stevens (Michael Dorman), and Danielle Poole (Krys Marshall) found their only entertainment in a video cassette of The Bob Newhart Show, which had just six episodes.

Ed, Dani, and Gordo watched The Bob Newhart Show constantly, to the point where they had entire episodes memorized and started greeting each other like the characters with a simple, “Hi Bob!” They continued this playful habit even after returning from their NASA missions and subsequent spaceflights. This inside joke quickly spread to fans of For All Mankind, becoming a well-known and beloved part of the Apple TV+ series.

There’s No One Left In For All Mankind To Say “Hi Bob”

With the death of Admiral Ed Baldwin in For All Mankind season 5, episode 3, a significant era for the show has come to a close. Ed, who died of cancer after a heroic rescue of Lee Jung-Gil, was the last surviving member of the original ‘Hi Bob!’ trio from Jamestown. His passing effectively ends the recurrence of that iconic greeting on the show.

Gordo Stevens was the first hero to die in the For All Mankind Jamestown settlement. Even though he suffered from PTSD after his difficult first season on the Moon, Gordo returned to Jamestown hoping to reconnect with his wife, Tracy (played by Sarah Jones). In the season 2 finale of For All Mankind, Gordo and Tracy tragically died together, sacrificing themselves to prevent a nuclear disaster at Jamestown and saving the settlement from exposure to the lunar surface.

Despite likely still being alive within the story of For All Mankind season 5, Krys Marshall will not be returning as Dani Poole. In season 4, Dani and Ed teamed up one last time – even putting aside their long-standing rivalry – when she led operations at Mars’ Happy Valley while Ed secretly aided Helios Aerospace in stealing the Goldilocks asteroid. Though Dani was shot, she successfully made it back to Earth in the season 4 finale.

Season 5 of For All Mankind is set in 2012, over four decades after the show began. The season follows the events after Russia won the space race by landing on the moon in 1969. Ed, Gordo, and Dani were the astronauts on the Apollo 22 mission, and they were stranded in Jamestown from July to December 1973. Ed remained there for a few weeks after Dani and Gordo returned home.

In the world of For All Mankind, the phrase “Hi Bob!” became a special greeting shared between Dani, Gordo, and Ed, starting in 1973. They would always say it to each other whenever they met. Even after Gordo’s death, Ed and Dani continued using the phrase in seasons 3 and 4 of the show. However, because the meaning behind “Hi Bob!” was rooted in the unique experiences Ed, Gordo, and Dani shared in Jamestown, they never explained it to anyone else, and it wasn’t adopted by other characters.

The Rest Of For All Mankind No Longer Has Joel Kinnaman’s Ed Baldwin

Starting with episode 4 of season 5, For All Mankind is moving forward without its original lead, Joel Kinnaman, who played Ed Baldwin. Ed had been a central character since the show began and appeared in every episode. While it seemed unlikely he’d survive as the series progressed, his presence provided a sense of stability.

Joel Kinnaman revealed to ScreenRant that when he first signed on to For All Mankind, the plan was for him to appear throughout five seasons, with the story exploring the full extent of his character, Ed Baldwin’s, journey. Kinnaman feels that Ed’s death earlier in season five, rather than at the very end, allows the show to continue beyond that season without needing to begin its final season without a key character.

Now that Ed has passed away, Wrenn Schmidt is the last remaining original cast member from season one of For All Mankind still playing her character, Margo Madison. Because Margo is ten years younger than Ed, it’s possible she could be the only actor from the show’s beginning still around when the series ends. However, Margo wasn’t involved in the famous “Hi Bob!” catchphrase shared by Ed, Gordo, and Dani.

The show For All Mankind frequently uses flashbacks, meaning we might still see Dani, Ed, and Gordo before the series ends. Even if they don’t return for the rest of season 5 or the upcoming final season, fans will continue to remember and talk about the ‘Jamestown trio’ and their iconic ‘Hi Bob!’ moment.
