Oblivion Remastered expands its “modding capabilities” with a script extender just like the original RPG and Skyrim, but the creator says don’t “get your hopes up yet”

For about a week now, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered has been available, and it seems that skilled fans have been tirelessly modifying Bethesda Game Studios’ revamped RPG since then. In fact, one fan has already launched a script extender for the game.

Similar to the original versions of Oblivion and Skyrim from 2006, the remaster now comes equipped with its own script extender. This tool, known as the Oblivion Remastered Script Extender or “OBSE64”, has been developed by modder “ianpatt” on Nexus Mods and has already garnered over 80,000 downloads. According to its creator’s explanation, it is a tool that enhances the modding capabilities of Oblivion Remastered for aspiring modders.

The debut of OBSE64 is quite significant, given that Bethesda explicitly stated “modifications are not endorsed” for Oblivion Remastered. This implies that there won’t be a tool like the original RPG‘s Construction Set or Skyrim’s Creation Kit to assist modders in expanding the game. However, a tool such as a script extender can bypass limitations, granting fans greater access to the remaster’s engine and providing them with tools to add features or enhance the game more effortlessly.

For the enthusiastic Oblivion Remastered mod creators, it’s important to note that things aren’t as rosy as rainbows and sunshine – ianpatt confirms this himself. The script extender is still under development and will be tailored to meet the requirements of the modders. Moreover, it won’t be a carbon copy of the 2006 Oblivion’s script extender. Since modding is likely to be quite distinct, this new version isn’t intended to replicate the classic OBSE’s functionality directly.
