Bethesda celebrates Oblivion Remastered by watching 19-year-old documentary about the making of the original, and Todd Howard says “this is gonna be really f***ing awkward”

To honor Oblivion Remastered, Bethesda has assembled several of their veteran team members for a special viewing of a behind-the-scenes documentary chronicling the creation of the original 19-year-old role-playing game.

In a single room, several Bethesda developers are observing their younger counterparts diligently working on what would later become one of the most popular role-playing games ever made. Todd Howard, who held an executive producer position for the game, expressed his apprehension by saying, “This is bound to feel quite uncomfortable watching this unfold.

The 42nd hire from the company exclaims, “I’m sporting the identical necklace currently,” as they spot their younger counterpart explaining how to incorporate trees and roads into the urban landscapes of Cyrodiil.

One developer noted: “The team seemed incredibly compact and closely-knit. In essence, they were practically the entire company – not many more people than there are here right now.” Such a thought makes one appreciate how modest video game development teams of yesteryears operated.

Reflecting on their past work habits, one developer muses: “Watching that [documentary] is like being back at a summer camp. An exciting, pressure-filled, summer camp. We hadn’t realized we were on the verge of releasing games like Fallout 3, Skyrim, and Fallout 4.

Looking back, I can’t help but recall the challenges we faced during development,” I reminisce. “But it seems we tapped into something fundamental: the human desire to discover.” Roaming the realms of Skyrim and Fallout 3 remain among my most cherished pastimes within those games.

As the documentary concludes, Howard turns to us and his crew, admitting that it was every bit as uncomfortable as I had anticipated. Reflecting on it all, looking around the room, it feels eerily familiar, just like old times.

He similarly expresses: “It was incredibly challenging to accomplish our goal. Yet, the deep emotional satisfaction you get from overcoming immense difficulties as a team, that feeling stays with you for twenty years, and we’ll cherish it for another twenty.

It’s refreshing to learn that several developers from the same company have been with them for nearly two decades now. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that they continue to work together on creating games for another two decades as well.
