A clever and original sci-fi movie that didn’t get much attention when it first came out is now becoming a hit on streaming services. The film centers around a powerful Artificial Intelligence that poses a threat to everyone – a concept that feels particularly relevant today! It’s currently topping streaming charts not just in the US, but around the globe. Directed by Gareth Edwards, who also directed Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Godzilla, and starring John David Washington and other well-known actors, the movie unfortunately didn’t perform well in cinemas. However, it’s now found a dedicated audience and is becoming a cult favorite online.
Despite a disappointing theatrical run in 2023, the science fiction film The Creator is finding success on streaming services. It’s recently climbed into the Top 10 on multiple platforms, including HBO Max, where it’s currently the eighth most popular movie worldwide. Currently, the remake of Anaconda is the most-watched film on HBO Max, followed by Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic and Conclave.
Gareth Edwards and Chris Weitz teamed up to write the sci-fi film, The Creator. The story takes place after an AI attack on the US, leading to a war where humans hunt robots. However, the robots have a powerful advantage: a human-like AI child. John David Washington plays Joshua, a soldier tasked with finding and destroying this AI, but he begins to question his mission as he starts to feel empathy for it. The film is essentially a futuristic take on the Vietnam War, and it’s as exciting as you’d expect. The cast also includes Allison Janney, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Amar Chadha-Patel, and Ralph Ineson.
‘The Creator’ Deserved Better From Sci-Fi Fans
While The Creator isn’t quite on the level of Blade Runner, it’s still a welcome effort in an era dominated by reboots and remakes – especially considering how rare original science fiction films are. Unfortunately, it didn’t attract a large enough audience in theaters. With a budget of $80 million, the film only earned $104 million, which isn’t enough to recoup costs. Considering marketing and theater expenses, it needed to earn over $160 million just to break even.
Critics had a mixed reaction to the film The Creator, and it didn’t generate much general excitement. It currently has a 67% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. However, after becoming available on streaming services, viewers have responded more positively, giving it a 75% audience score on the site.
‘The Creator’ is One of the Most Beautiful Sci-Fi Movies Ever Made

Regardless of what you think of the story, The Creator is a truly beautiful film to watch. Director Gareth Edwards’ experience with visual effects means the CGI is remarkably good, comparable to District 9. The film’s stunning visuals were achieved through the work of cinematographer Oren Soffer, who used special lenses and real-world locations to create a breathtaking sci-fi environment. While it didn’t win the Best Visual Effects Oscar – Godzilla: Minus One was a worthy winner – The Creator is sure to be remembered as one of the most visually impressive science fiction films ever made.
