US Prosecutors Seek More Time to Decide on Dropping Samourai Wallet Charges

Ah, the joys of court delays and crypto drama. The co-founders of Samourai Wallet and U.S. prosecutors have decided, in their infinite wisdom, to ask a federal judge for a little more time to decide if they’ll drop charges in this ongoing crypto soap opera. The show must go on, right?

“We’ll take our time and maybe, just maybe, we’ll let you know what we think.” How reassuring.

This delay request also comes on the heels of a massive policy reversal at the Department of Justice. In early April, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche made the bold move of disbanding the DOJ’s National Cryptocurrency Enforcement Team, a task force created under the previous administration. Apparently, regulating crypto by prosecution isn’t exactly the best approach. Who knew?

Blanche didn’t mince words: the DOJ is “not a digital assets regulator” and should focus only on cases involving actual criminal harm, like fraud or using crypto to commit serious crimes. This memo has already made waves, with lawyers now citing it as a reason to drop charges in other cases, like the one involving SafeMoon CEO Braden Karony. So, if you’re an entrepreneur in the crypto space, maybe it’s time to update your business model. Just a thought.

As for Samourai’s defense team, they had already written to Acting Manhattan U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton on April 10, requesting the case be dismissed due to this new policy. Apparently, the DOJ has had a change of heart and doesn’t want to pursue charges against developers who create privacy tools — because apparently, that’s not a crime anymore. It’s almost like the DOJ doesn’t know what it’s doing half the time. Hilarious, right?
