How To Get The Book From Janus Hassildor In Oblivion Remastered
In the latest installment of the Mages’ Guild saga within The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, you edge nearer to deciphering the cause behind the necromancer disturbances in Tamriel. Following their emergence and massacre of guardians safeguarding arcane lore, this quest for wisdom is intensely personal.
Holding firmly the final wizard’s staff, you’ll embark on a perilous mission disguised casually as a routine library task. Pretending innocence may prove beneficial as you seemingly stroll into the treacherous traps of a hidden plot.
How To Begin Ulterior Motives
For this quest to be available, you must have:
- Completed all Mages’ Guild Recommendation quests.
- Completed the Mages’ Staff quest.
- Spoken to Raminus Polus about Advancement to Journeyman.
After you become a Journeyman mage, you’ll be able to inquire about tasks from Raminus, and he’ll inform you of a task involving getting back a borrowed book from Count Skingrad.
How To Recover The Book From Janus Hassildor

Visit Skingrad and engage in a conversation with Mercator Hosidus, who is typically located within the County Hall at Skingrad Castle.
You’ll need to hold off on speaking with Mercator for another 24 hours. That will be your opportunity to engage with him.

As reliable as he always is, Mercator will let you know to rendezvous with the count and himself at 2AM, outside the Cursed Mine, on your second attempt.
Instead of meeting him at the north of the mine as he suggests, you’ll find him slightly west (slightly southwest), specifically between the mine and the Grateful Pass Stables on the map and in person.
It seems there’s no covert way for you to enter the count’s private chambers and personally alert him about Mercator.
Here’s another variation: It looks like you won’t be able to slip into the count’s room undetected to give him a heads-up on Mercator.
And yet another: You don’t seem to have an opportunity for a secret visit to the count’s quarters where you could privately inform him about Mercator.

An unexpected turn of events: It’s revealed that Mercator will be joined by two necromancers in the vineyard at some point between 10PM and 2AM, a scene unlikely to have been anticipated by anyone.
Instead of engaging in a one-on-three battle with the necromancers, consider turning around and heading back towards the gate where the guards are located. That way, you can enlist their aid against the necromancers.
The count will join you too. Yet, at times, others (like the guards) may confront him due to his being a vampire once the necromancers have been vanquished. To avoid this glitch, chat with Count Janus following the necromancers’ demise so he can deal with any issues from the guards afterwards.

After defeating the necromancers, have a conversation with Count Janus about the true motive behind the University sending you to Skingrad.
After listening to Janus’s lecture on my credulity and having exhausted our conversation, I head back to Arcane University to complete the quest with Raminus Polus.
Share with him everything you’ve discovered, and in return, progress to the rank of Evoker. This promotion comes with a Spelldrinker Amulet as your reward. (Alternatively, You are instructed to impart all that you have learned, and in exchange for this knowledge, you will be promoted to the rank of Evoker. With this new position, you’ll receive the Spelldrinker Amulet.)
Spelldrinker Amulet: Gives 9-26 points of Spell Absorption (based on the level you gain it at). |
