‘Jason Statham Stole My Bike’ Could Fix the Actor’s Worst Career Trend

Jason Statham has been acting for 28 years, and he’s still incredibly popular. He started with a role in Guy Ritchie’s Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and has steadily built a successful career ever since. It’s rare for an action star to stay relevant for so long – most peak for around a decade – but Statham continues to thrive, with an increasing number of films released each year.

Jason Statham stands out from most action heroes. While many began with backgrounds in bodybuilding, martial arts, or the military, Statham was a competitive diver, representing England at the 1990 Commonwealth Games. He even worked as a model for brands like Tommy Hilfiger, French Connection, and Levi’s before becoming a Hollywood star. Now, he has a new film in development that could finally overcome one of the few weaknesses in his otherwise successful career.

What Is Jason Statham’s Worst Career Trend?

A few weeks ago, I discussed how Jason Statham often plays similar roles, and I’m happy to revisit that idea. He almost always portrays a former tough guy – an ex-assassin, ex-military operative, ex-police officer, and so on. The plot usually involves someone harming him or someone he cares about, leading to a long, action-packed revenge quest. Even the trailer for his new movie, Mutiny, establishes him as a retired cop with a military past. It would be refreshing to see him play an active duty SEAL or even a scientist for a change!

Jason Statham often plays a loner, a former operative now on the run from his old allies. Throughout these films, he consistently demonstrates incredible fighting and driving abilities, performing daring and unbelievable stunts. While it’s widely known he does many of his own stunts, some are so extreme they seem impossible—like the time he drove an Audi on two wheels between two semi-trucks in The Transporter 3.

It’s frustrating how often this happens. Do filmmakers write scripts after casting British actor Jason Statham, tailoring the roles to play to his strengths? Or are these resemblances just chance? Actually, it’s deliberate. Statham himself explained in a 2015 interview with The Guardian:

I enjoy making action films – they’ve been a fantastic foundation for my career. Since I love doing them and it’s worked well for me, I want to keep pursuing this passion.

Jason Statham isn’t focused on winning awards or getting good reviews; he prefers to follow his instincts. But he seems to be trying something new, as he’s taking on a role in a comedy film.

Jason Statham Will Play Himself in ‘Jason Statham Stole My Bike

It’s not uncommon for actors to play versions of themselves in movies, and Jason Statham is joining that group. The upcoming film, as reported by Deadline, centers around an everyday person whose bicycle is stolen by Statham – apparently during an action-packed scene – and their quest to reclaim it. Let’s just say, the person trying to get their bike back – whether they’re a dentist, a student, or someone else – is facing a tough challenge.

The upcoming action comedy promises a similar vibe to Nicolas Cage’s The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, and there’s good reason to be excited. David Leitch, known for directing films like Deadpool 2, Fall Guy, and Bullet Train, is at the helm. He’s already worked with star Jason Statham on Hobbs & Shaw, a Fast & Furious spin-off, so they have a solid working relationship. Plus, with Alison Flierl, the writer from BoJack Horseman, on board, the film is likely to be filled with smart and humorous storylines.

While it’s still early days, Jason Statham Stole My Bike seems like a departure from his usual action roles. He’s known for playing tough, stoic heroes, but this film promises more confusion, silliness, and a lighter tone. The script will also include witty, metal-inspired one-liners, which have been missing from his recent movies. The big question is whether Statham can pull off comedy. Sylvester Stallone’s Stop My Mom Will Shoot was a notorious flop, but Statham has shown a willingness to try humor during his time with the Fast & Furious franchise. Currently, there’s no confirmed release date, but the movie is anticipated to arrive sometime in 2027.
