5 Things I Want to See in the Oblivion Remaster
With leaked images suggesting a remaster of the long-rumored “The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion,” fans are now allowed to feel their excitement brew. Although Bethesda has yet to make an official announcement about the remaster or the rumored launch date of April 21st, the authenticity appears undeniable. If true, this means Elder Scrolls enthusiasts like myself have high expectations for what the Oblivion remaster should embody. Given Bethesda’s extensive work on Skyrim and presumably Elder Scrolls 6, the pressure is substantial for this upcoming addition to the series.
2006 saw the debut of Oblivion on Xbox and PC, with a PS3 version following suit shortly after. This game garnered a Metacritic score of 94 and was hailed as Game of the Year during its launch year. Even today, the Steam version continues to impress with an Overwhelmingly Positive rating. For those who yearn for a return to this classic, Steam offers the opportunity, but revisiting games from the PS3 era can be tricky. The anticipated remaster in 2025 could potentially broaden Oblivion’s audience significantly. But let’s face it, not all remasters are equally impressive, and Bethesda will need to pull out all the stops to meet the expectations of dedicated Elder Scrolls enthusiasts like myself. Here’s what I truly hope to see in the Oblivion remaster.
True Graphics Improvements That Expand the World
In its day, the initial version of “Oblivion” boasted some remarkably good visuals. When combined with the vast and ever-changing atmosphere of the game’s universe, these aspects help explain why it shares a spot as a timeless favorite with “Skyrim”. With the remastered edition, we eagerly await seeing how enhanced graphics might deepen that immersive experience from the original.
Oblivion remaster and original comparison

As a passionate fan, I must admit that the leaked screenshots have sparked mixed reactions among us. Some of us, including myself, find them promising, suggesting a significant improvement over the original. However, others were anticipating something even more groundbreaking. What I yearn for in the upcoming game is a tangible sense of purpose behind every detail, one that breathes new life into the Elder Scrolls universe without feeling like just another Skyrim rehash.
Retain & Refine the High Quality Quests
Even someone sporting a pastry-adorned sticker on their gaming computer might concede that Skyrim’s quests can become monotonous after prolonged play. Compared to it, some Elder Scrolls enthusiasts find the narrative arcs in Oblivion to be more engaging and complex, especially within the Dark Brotherhood. This game provides a greater number of quests intertwined with various towns, instead of having the player embark on numerous fetch missions without end.
In order to create an exceptional remaster, Bethesda should retain the compelling narrative aspects of the original quests, while modernizing and streamlining any dated gameplay mechanics that slow things down. It’s important to maintain the overall storyline for new fans, but making side quests more accessible could help keep the experience engaging.
Bring Iconic Characters to Life
Without solid information on the remaster, it’s uncertain how the character voices or designs will change. Despite this uncertainty, the rich world of Oblivion is populated with unique characters such as Lucien Lachance and Vicente Valtieri. The challenge lies in maintaining the charm of these characters while giving them a fresh update for modern gaming platforms, possibly involving new voiceovers as well.
Essentially, our aim is to recreate the joy of encountering these cherished characters once more, enhanced to reflect the value this remaster may entail. We want to maintain their unique personalities, staying true to what initially made us love them, but with a fresh, updated look.
Streamlined Mechanics
Even though the combat in Oblivion was solid, we noticed enhancements and refinements in Skyrim. To truly fulfill its potential, a remaster should generally stay true to the original, but subtle adjustments could elevate it further. Introducing some of that polished experience into the remaster will help maintain enjoyment for fans who aren’t clouded by nostalgia.
Run Smoothly But Keep The Quirks
One concern I have about re-working a game like Oblivion is that polishing the gameplay might eliminate some of the peculiarities we cherish from Elder Scrolls series, which add charm to these games. While glitches and bugs can be frustrating, the unintentional oddities in Skyrim and Oblivion are part of what makes them enjoyable. For example, check out the character who disappears in the video clip above.
Bethesda could strike a balance between incorporating amusing references to the game’s unique aspects and ensuring smooth performance by featuring guards who react quirkily to my sneaking, complete with humorous remarks, while at the same time keeping the frame rate optimized for a seamless gaming experience.
