Lisa Wilkinson announces shock return to the Today show: ‘I’ll be back at the desk with Karl!’

Oh my gosh, I almost fell off my chair when I heard! Lisa Wilkinson is coming BACK to Today! Can you believe it? It’s been eight years since she left, and I honestly thought she was gone for good. I’m absolutely thrilled – she was the best part of that show, and I’ve missed her so much! This is amazing news!

I was so thrilled to see that our beloved presenter, who’s 66, announced on social media yesterday that she’ll be on Channel Nine’s breakfast show tomorrow! She’s going to be talking about her new book, and I can’t wait to tune in and hear all about it. It’s wonderful to see her still so active and sharing her work with us.

Lisa announced on Instagram that she’s returning to the Today Show after over eight years to chat with Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo about her new book, as well as her research on the Titanic and Evelyn Marsden.

‘With maybe a little reminiscing thrown in for good measure. See you after 8 o’clock.’

Lisa’s latest book, The Titanic Story of Evelyn, tells the compelling story of the sole Australian survivor of the 1912 Titanic disaster and is now available for purchase in bookstores.

‘Haha. Don’t forget to set your alarm,’ Karl quipped.

Sarah excitedly wrote, “This is going to be fun! I can’t wait! Are you free in August?” Lisa playfully replied, “That’s funny you ask, Sarah… I actually have a lot of free time right now!”

Lisa and Karl Stefanovic co-hosted the Today show together for more than ten years, from 2007 until 2017.

Following a recent interview with Stellar, the well-known broadcaster discussed returning to work, the difficulties of being in the public eye, and her new book.

She explained that the project arose unexpectedly during a difficult time with legal issues. It wasn’t something she actively sought out; it simply sparked her interest one day as a way to cope with getting through each day, she said.

Getting lost in another person’s story was a welcome escape. I was constantly in the news, and honestly, I was tired of seeing myself everywhere. I can only guess how overwhelming it must have been for everyone else.

Wilkinson’s book centers around Evelyn Marsden, the sole Australian survivor of the Titanic disaster.

It’s a story that resonated with her, quickly becoming more than just historical research.

Wilkinson explains she felt constantly struggling against overwhelming challenges, which is why she dedicated the book to women like Evelyn who have faced similar difficulties.

‘That was the moment when I just fell in love with her and just knew that I had to do this story.’

Honestly, learning about the Titanic – and the sheer scale of the loss, over 1500 lives – really shifted my perspective on things. It’s a humbling experience that puts everything into context, and I think it’s important to remember those stories.

Experiencing such a profound loss really helped me see my own problems weren’t so bad after all.

The past few years haven’t been easy.

After Wilkinson interviewed Brittany Higgins on the program The Project in 2021, she became the focus of significant public discussion.

But she insists she never regretted telling the story.

‘I don’t think I ever had that thought, but I certainly had some very rough days,’ she says.

It always felt like I was just trying to protect my efforts, not facing a life-or-death situation. It wasn’t about survival, just about defending what I’d created.
