Right, so Meta, that behemoth that owns Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp – basically, all the places you waste your time avoiding actual work – has decided it needs more data. And whose data is up for grabs? Why, yours, of course, especially if you happen to reside in the delightful continent of Europe. Starting May 27th, your digital musings will be fed into the gaping maw of their Generative AI model. Because, you know, AI needs to be smarter. Or at least, appear smarter.
The announcement, made with the subtlety of a herd of digital elephants, reveals that even your interactions with their Meta AI chatbot (which, let’s be honest, probably isn’t as witty as your average toaster) will be used to… enhance things. Apparently, your Facebook comments and Instagram captions are the secret sauce to making AI truly, madly, deeply… mediocre.
Now, before you start panicking about your deeply embarrassing WhatsApp messages being dissected by algorithms, fear not! (Well, maybe a little fear is healthy.) Apparently, those private conversations with your family and friends are safe. For now. However, if you’re not thrilled about the idea of your public pronouncements being harvested like digital wheat, you can opt out. By filling out a form. Because nothing says “privacy” like a bureaucratic hurdle designed to bore you into submission. 😴
Meta, in its infinite wisdom, promises to notify you about this new policy before the aforementioned May 27th deadline. They’ll even provide a link to the opt-out form. How considerate! It’s like they’re saying, “We’re taking your data, but here’s a tiny, almost invisible fig leaf of choice.”
And don’t worry, kiddies! Meta assures us that the data of users under the tender age of 18 is off-limits. Because exploiting the data of adults is somehow more ethical? 🤔
Meta’s obsession with AI mirrors that of other tech giants, like OpenAI. They’re all desperately trying to build the next ChatGPT, because nothing says “innovation” like chasing the shiny new object everyone else is chasing. 🏃♀️
To achieve this AI nirvana, Meta is throwing money at the problem. A cool $60 to $65 billion this year, mostly to build data centers. Because, you know, you can’t have a good AI apocalypse without a solid infrastructure. They’ve also unleashed Llama-4, their latest “open-weight” AI model. Which sounds impressive, until you realize it probably just means they’re sharing their mistakes with the world. 🤷♀️
