As a devoted fan myself, I’m thrilled to see so many others revisiting the captivating world of Monster Hunter Wilds with its initial title update. Whether you’re a seasoned player catching up or a fresh recruit embarking on your first adventure, Monster Hunter Wilds offers a treasure trove of weapons, armor, and gear waiting to be discovered by both newcomers and returning adventurers alike!
In Monster Hunter Wilds, an essential feature linking weapons and armor is the skill system. This enables players to combine useful skills from various armor pieces and weapons, creating an optimal blend of attack, defense, and utility tailored to their character. With close to 150 unique skills in total, there’s plenty for players to tinker with and discover.
As a gamer, I’ve learned that not all abilities mesh well with every weapon. Some abilities are quite specialized, while others offer broader, beneficial effects. When it comes to wielding Bows in Monster Hunter Wilds, the focus is typically on skills that enhance damage from afar, manage stamina usage, and boost the effectiveness of charged attacks. With these goals in mind, here are some top-tier abilities for players using Bows in Monster Hunter Wilds.
9. Coating Functionality
Status On Demand

- Effect: Allows the use of specific coatings
Instead of referring to one skill, there are several potential skills depending on the desired coating by players. Each specific skill decoration will bear a name based on its effect, such as Poisoncoat jewel or Sleepcoat jewel, etc. Utilizing these decorations enables Bow players to apply coatings that aren’t built into their weapons. Players may opt to use these decorations with an Artian weapon without any inherent status effect, for example. This can be a powerful ability, but it is only useful in specific situations and requires prior knowledge of monster vulnerabilities to monsters’ status effects to be effective.
8. Partbreaker
Wound Breaking Damage Boost

- Effect: Makes it easier to break monster parts, increases damage dealt when destroying a wound with a focus strike
Utilizing Partbreaker in conjunction with the Bow can significantly enhance your gameplay. This skill allows you to inflict greater damage on specific enemy body parts, which is rather straightforward with the Bow’s accurate targeting. Moreover, Partbreaker grants a substantial damage increase, up to 30%, when you destroy a wound with a focus strike. Given that the bow’s focus strike naturally targets wounds on monsters, this results in a formidable additional damage boost. Plus, players can follow up with Dragon Piercer after breaking a wound with Partbreaker.
7. Charge Master
Charge Attack Buff

- Effect: Increases element power and status buildup for charged attacks
If you’re a bow user aiming to maximize elemental or status damage, Charge Master is a vital ability for you. This skill amplifies the elemental harm players receive and boosts the accumulation of status effects with each strike from a charged attack. When paired with status enchantments, the Bow becomes an incredibly dependable weapon for inflicting status conditions overall.
6. Tetrad Shot
Coating Booster

- Effect: Increases affinity of bowgun ammo/coatings from the fourth shot and the attack of the fourth and sixth shots
Mastering Tetrad Shot might not be straightforward when it comes to using the Bow, but it’s undeniably an effective choice for players aiming to enhance their focus on status accumulation. Once a coating is applied, this skill amplifies the affinity of every shot after the fourth, making the final six shots out of ten significantly more likely to be critical strikes. This, coupled with the increased damage to shots four and six, makes Tetrad Shot an excellent pick for maximizing both damage output and status buildup from your coatings. However, it’s essential to note that this skill only offers benefits when you’re actively utilizing coatings.
5. Adrenaline Rush
Perfect Dodge Damage Buff

- Effect: Temporarily increases attack power after executing a perfectly-timed evade
Using the Bow effectively requires careful management of stamina, especially during consecutive attacks and charges, so strategies that aid in maintaining stamina are valuable. Bow users experience a substantial stamina recovery surge upon executing a perfect dodge, and this is further enhanced with Adrenaline Rush, which not only recovers stamina but also increases attack power. At its base level, Adrenaline Rush grants an additional 10 attack points, with the potential to boost this up to 30 if players have fully mastered the skill. This significant attack enhancement is particularly beneficial for a weapon that encourages well-timed dodges.
4. Stamina Surge
Faster Recovery

- Effect: Increases stamina recovery speed
For a Bow user, quickly depleting the stamina gauge is common when aiming for consistent damage against a monster. However, having Stamina Surge as a skill significantly cuts down on downtime by enhancing the pace at which stamina regenerates. At first, it provides a 10% boost in recovery speed, but with three levels upgraded, this acceleration doubles to 50%, allowing Bow users to swiftly restore their full stamina bar as they adjust their position between shots.
3. Focus
Faster Charging

- Effect: Increases fill rate for weapons with gauges and charge rate for weapons with charge attacks
The ability to concentrate is a versatile talent, beneficial across various types of weapons. While numerous weapons prioritize this talent for its quickening of gauge fill, the Bow gains more advantage from the elevated speed at which it can charge up for charge attacks. This means that players will be able to reach the maximum charge on their attacks faster, thereby increasing their damage per second (DPS) output in combat as they can execute a higher volume of attacks in a shorter timeframe. Additionally, the trick arrow gauge also profits from this talent, allowing players to utilize more tracers and coatings, although this benefit is less substantial compared to the charge rate increase.
2. Special Ammo Boost
Special Shot Buff

- Effect: Increases the power of the Bowgun’s special ammo, and the Bow’s Thousand Dragon’s, Dragon Piercer, and Tracer
The Special Ammo Boost ability is exclusive to users of Bows and Bowguns, and it’s particularly advantageous for both types of weapons. For Bow users, this ability amplifies the attack power of specific special attacks such as Thousand Dragons, Dragon Piercer, and Tracer. This boost in damage is substantial at all skill levels, and since these moves are often incorporated into a Bow player’s regular combos, activating this skill simply enhances their overall damage output without requiring any additional player input.
1. Ballistics
Ideal Range Increase

- Effect: Extends the range in which ammo and arrows have maximum power
In Monster Hunter Wilds, it’s crucial for archers (Bow and Bowgun users) to grasp and master the concept of optimal shooting range. You’ll soon discover that your arrows don’t consistently deal the same damage to monsters due to this factor. The closer or further away you are from a monster, the less effective your ranged attacks become as a kind of penalty. Ballistics, on the other hand, expands the zone where optimal range lies, making it easier for archers to stay within this ideal distance from their target. This skill is indispensable for bow users, especially when dealing with agile monsters that can make staying at the right distance challenging without it.
