Well, butter my biscuit and call me confused-Polkadot’s native token, DOT, decided to take a nosedive faster than a penguin on a waterslide. In a matter of minutes, it plummeted over 7%, leaving investors scratching their heads and checking their wallets like they’d just left their car unlocked in a sketchy neighborhood.
Apparently, some clever (or should I say, cheeky) hacker decided that minting a cool billion DOT tokens on the Ethereum mainnet was the perfect way to spend their Tuesday. And sell them off? Oh, they did. Faster than a politician backpedaling on a campaign promise. The price dropped from a cozy $1.24 to a panicked $1.15 before clawing its way back to around $1.20. Because, you know, drama.
Arkham, the blockchain sleuths, chimed in to say that the mystery attacker didn’t just stop at minting-they went full-on liquidity pool shark, pulling out over $240,000 in ETH across multiple transactions. Lookonchain confirmed the exploit, noting the attacker walked away with a tidy $237,000 (108.2 ETH). Not a bad day’s work, if you’re into that sort of thing.
Wu Blockchain, ever the reliable narrator, cited Certik’s data, which pointed the finger at a vulnerability in the Hyperbridge gateway. Apparently, this allowed the digital miscreants to forge messages and manipulate the administrator of a Polkadot token contract on Ethereum. Because, of course, what’s a blockchain without a good old-fashioned vulnerability to keep things interesting?
Just In: Hackers minted 1 billion DOT tokens on the Ethereum mainnet and then sold them off.
According to Certik, the attack was primarily due to a Hyperbridge gateway vulnerability, which allowed attackers to forge messages and manipulate the administrator of a Polkadot token…

So there you have it, folks. Another day in the wild west of crypto, where the only thing more volatile than the prices is the security. Stay tuned, because if history’s any guide, this won’t be the last time someone decides to play digital Robin Hood-minus the whole “steal from the rich to give to the poor” part.
