Ralph Fiennes, who was absolutely amazing as Voldemort in the movies, has finally shared his thoughts on who could possibly fill those shoes – and, you know, handle the whole no-nose look!
Ralph Fiennes on potential return as Voldemort and preferred casting choice
Ralph Fiennes has confirmed he won’t be returning to play Tom Riddle, the character that famously frightened many movie fans. He discussed the rumors while appearing on BBC’s The Claudia Winkleman Show, putting an end to speculation about his involvement in the upcoming HBO series.
Ralph Fiennes said he was once asked if he’d be interested in returning to a role he’d previously played. He enthusiastically agreed at the time. However, he’s now resigned to the fact that it won’t happen, as he hasn’t heard from the studio despite the project moving forward. ‘I think that opportunity has passed,’ he explained.
Now that Ralph Fiennes is no longer playing the role, HBO is looking for a new actor to portray Voldemort. Despite online speculation and rumors suggesting Cillian Murphy might be considered, both HBO boss Casey Bloys and Murphy himself have stated that no decision has been made. Murphy even admitted last year that he wasn’t aware of any offers and acknowledged how difficult it would be to follow Fiennes’ performance.
Rather than suggesting himself, Ralph Fiennes supported Tilda Swinton as a potential Voldemort. He stated the Oscar-winning actress would be “fantastic” in the role, a suggestion that’s been circulating among Harry Potter fans.
Tilda Swinton’s unique presence and talent for changing her appearance have made her a popular pick for the rumored role, but HBO’s content chief, Casey Bloys, has asked fans not to trust casting news until it’s officially confirmed.
The new Harry Potter series is releasing on HBO Max on Christmas 2026.
