She burst onto showbiz scene a decade ago with her catchy hit, Lush Life.
Zara Larsson is famous for her upbeat songs and cheerful personality, but she’s also known for being direct and isn’t afraid to honestly share her thoughts about other celebrities.
The 28-year-old Swedish singer has once again sparked controversy with Taylor Swift and her devoted fans, known as Swifties. This is the second time this week she’s faced criticism for comments seemingly directed at them.
Honestly, when Zara was talking about her success, she said she doesn’t even try to chase chart positions because, according to her, nobody cares about them anymore! Can you believe it? She then immediately followed that up by saying except for Taylor Swift’s fans, and oh my gosh, the Swifties are furious! It’s total chaos, and I’m living for it, even if Zara didn’t realize what she was getting into by even mentioning us!
Zara often sparks conversation with her candid personality, openly sharing her thoughts on politics, current events, and other famous people without holding back.
We’re taking a look at famous people – from musicians to social media influencers – who have faced criticism from Zara.
Zara recently sparked controversy after telling The Guardian she doesn’t care about chasing chart success. She said most people aren’t interested in chart rankings, except those in the music industry and fans of Taylor Swift.
The comment quickly went viral on social media, and fans created a fake post pretending to be Taylor, saying simply, ‘honestly just… disappointed.’ However, Taylor hadn’t actually made any public statement about the comment.
Despite that, Taylor Swift’s fans quickly flooded social media, with many writing comments like: ‘Zara Larsson may have just ruined her career. That was a mistake. There was no need to criticize Taylor, especially considering how good ‘Actually Romantic’ is.’
She’s trying to stay relevant by making negative comments about Taylor Swift. It’s unclear who even follows @zaralarsson.
I really don’t understand why she felt the need to bring that person’s name into it. What was she hoping to achieve? It seems like she was just trying to get attention.
It seems pretty clear Zara is jealous of Taylor, but she can’t bring herself to admit it. It’s a bit ironic, considering she often talks about self-awareness, but she doesn’t seem capable of looking inward and understanding what’s really bothering her.
Someone asked what Taylor Swift did to upset Zara Larsson, leading to her recent comments. Zara Larsson was then called out for making the statement, considering her own history of struggling to gain popularity despite actively seeking it.
After facing criticism from Taylor Swift’s fans, Zara explained her previous statements in an Instagram Story.
She explained that she told The Guardian no one really pays attention to music charts except those in the music industry and fans of Taylor Swift – pointing out that Taylor Swift is uniquely invested in chart performance.
She’s truly exceptional at what she does, and it’s widely recognized. People are misunderstanding the situation. And just so you know, I really do care! I’m planning to create at least two different cover designs for the physical release of my next project, following ‘Midnight Sun’.
I mentioned feeling like my music is connecting with people culturally – something new for me. However, I don’t have the power to make songs popular on the charts, which is a little frustrating. But I truly believe an artist can be incredibly talented and successful without topping the charts, and fans shouldn’t equate chart success with artistic merit.
I really want “Midnight Sun” to be the top choice! Please, please make it number one! That would be amazing!
Oh my gosh, you won’t BELIEVE this! Back in 2017, Zara actually mentioned Taylor – can you even?! – and basically begged her to speak up more about politics. I mean, Zara understands true artistry and knows Taylor has a voice that needs to be heard! It was such a powerful moment, seeing one amazing artist encouraging another to use their platform. I’ve been obsessed ever since!
She told Newsweek Europe that she wished the celebrity’s approach to feminism was more inclusive and considered how different forms of discrimination overlap, explaining that her large platform could be used to create positive change.
She’s being agreeable about everything, and I think it’s because she’s trying to avoid upsetting anyone.
‘She could have Trump supporters who are her fans, and maybe she doesn’t want to offend them.’
Zara has publicly shared her opinion on Chris Brown, who in 2009 pleaded guilty to assaulting his girlfriend Rihanna. As a result, he received five years of probation, was ordered to perform community service, and had to attend domestic violence counseling.
In 2016, Zara played a game called Song Tinder where she indicated whether she liked a song by swiping right or disliked it by swiping left.
As soon as one of Chris’ songs started playing, she immediately dismissed it, saying she didn’t like him personally. She admitted, though, that she actually enjoyed his music and thought he was a very talented performer – a great singer and dancer – but she didn’t think he was a kind person.
Taking to X, Twitter that same year, Zara wrote: ‘Chris brown is TRAAASSHHHHH.’
In 2019, Zara accused James Charles, a YouTuber, of sending inappropriate messages to her then-boyfriend, even though she knew he was not interested in men.
The singer spoke out after James faced criticism following a 43-minute video posted by fellow YouTuber Tati Westbrook. In the video, titled ‘Bye Sister,’ Westbrook explained why she was ending their friendship.
After seeing the video, Zara went on Twitter to say that James had messaged her boyfriend, Brian Whittaker, at the time.
She previously tweeted (and later deleted) that she found it funny because someone repeatedly messaged her boyfriend, despite knowing he’s straight.
She later wrote that she was considering deleting the post because her claim wasn’t accurate. She had only received one direct message and a few comments, not the ‘several’ she originally thought.
Tati claimed James repeatedly acted inappropriately, most recently by promoting a rival to her company. She also described a pattern of him making unwanted advances towards straight men, playing with people’s sexuality, and making crude sexual comments around her loved ones.
Zara removed her original tweets and then posted a new one, saying she was sorry for becoming part of the disagreement.
She explained that the situation made her uncomfortable because it felt overblown, and she didn’t want to be involved.
I regret getting involved, even though the situation was generally concerning.
Elsewhere back in 2023, Zara became embroiled in a feud with a TikToker called Ryan Crouse.
So, Ryan told me this amazing story – he said he went to see Zara Larsson perform in Washington D.C. back in 2018, and get this, he was actually pulled up on stage! Can you imagine? It sounds like an unforgettable night.
He explained that when they started singing, Zara pushed him off the stage and yelled at him. The video cut off before he could finish repeating what he said Zara told him, but many viewers believed he was suggesting she’d used a hateful, anti-LGBTQ+ insult.
Zara responded to Ryan’s post, explaining that she knew it was satire, but asked him to consider why some gay white men seem to find it humorous to portray women as homophobic. She said she enjoys his content and finds him likeable, but believes it’s important to understand the underlying reasons for this type of joke.
‘Everybody who knows me knows that I’m an ally.’
In 2021, Zara terminated its relationship with creative director Ryder Ripps after his former fiancée, Azealia Banks, shared messages where he made negative comments about her appearance.
Oh my god, I was absolutely horrified! I saw screenshots someone posted – apparently from her boyfriend, Ryder – on her Instagram Story. He was just relentlessly attacking her, saying the most awful things about her body and telling her she should just embrace being ‘fat’ instead of ‘trying to be hot.’ It’s just… unbelievable. I can’t even begin to imagine how she must be feeling right now. It’s disgusting, honestly.
Zara jokingly asked for recommendations for creative directors, writing over previous messages with a lighthearted post: ‘So… anyone know any good creative directors lol?’
Earlier that day, Azealia posted some screenshots that seemed to be messages from Ryder.
A post featuring a picture of Zara Larsson with the caption ‘Zara armsson’ appeared online, which the rapper noted was Ryder making fun of her arms again.
While other texts which appeared to be from the creative director saw another snap of Zara with the word ‘arm’ under it and the following claims: ‘im serrious, i think z should get fatter and stop trying to be hot just be a fat b***h.’
Zara shared screenshots and wrote: ‘It wasn’t Azealia Banks sharing a conversation with my creative director, Ryder, making fun of my arms. Especially considering I’m the one who pays his salary!’
She expressed frustration, asking, “What about my arm?” and pointing out the hypocrisy of someone criticizing her appearance when she already faces daily comments about her weight, specifically addressing Ryder Ripps with a direct question.
